Versasec AB[6] is a Swedish multinational corporation specializing in the design, development, and delivery of smart card management systems. The company is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden.
The company was previously known as Versatile Security since its foundation in 2007. It was rebranded Versasec in 2015.[7]
Joakim Thorén is the founder of Versasec and was appointed CEO in September 2012.[8]
History
[edit]Versasec was founded in 2007 by a team of four experts in identity and access management: Joakim Thorén, Jörg Dettmann, Paul Foley, and Per-Anders Fjärdsäter. The company focused on addressing the growing complexity of managing digital identities, particularly in smart card authentication.[9]
In 2009, Versasec launched its flagship product, vSEC:CMS, a credential management solution tailored to small and mid-sized enterprises. In 2010, Versasec announced a technology partnership with Gemalto, who would later be part of the Thales Group acquisition in 2018.[10][11][12]
In 2016, Versasec vSEC:CMS became the first smart card management system to manage the Yubico YubiKey.[13][14]
In 2019, the company expanded its offerings to include support for FIDO2, emphasizing passwordless authentication and zero-trust principles. By 2024, the company has introduced a dedicated FIDO2 Enterprise solution integrated with Microsoft Entra ID.[15]
Operations
[edit]Versasec specializes in identity and access management solutions, with its core product, vSEC:CMS, enabling organizations to efficiently manage digital credentials across various security ecosystems. The company's solutions are widely used to integrate PKI-based authentication, FIDO2 passwordless security, and enterprise Credential Management, supporting various credentials and hardware security modules (HSMs).[16]
Versasec's offerings cater to sectors ranging from small businesses to large enterprises, including financial institutions, healthcare providers, and governmental organizations. Its integrations include 25 partnerships[17] with major technology providers like Microsoft (via Entra ID) and DigiCert as a certificate authority. Versasec's software supports global enterprises in enhancing cybersecurity posture through multi-factor authentication and zero trust architecture principles.[18]
The company operates globally with offices in Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and other regions. Its solutions are designed to meet international standards, addressing regulatory compliance for industries requiring high levels of data protection and authentication integrity.[16][19]
The organization pledged Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Secure by design and became a member of the PKI Consortium in December 2024.[20][21]
Products
[edit]Versasec has two main products:
- vSEC:CMS[22][23] – credential or smart card management systems for managing PKI tokens, smart cards and digital certificates, generally with the intention to use the credentials as identification tokens and badges in organizations to enable multi-factor authentication and non-repudiation. vSEC:CMS is available as on-premises software, or as the SaaS vSEC:CLOUD.
- vSEC:CLOUD[24][25] - a managed service of the credential management software, vSEC:CMS. The credential management system is deployed in a virtual private cloud and is managed by Versasec, as a subscription based Software as a service.
Versasec has also developed a free application to help organizations adopt the highest authentication assurance level,[26] the vSEC:TOOL.
