Biography

[edit]

Valentin Goppel was born on May 22, 2000 in Regensburg, Germany. His father Christoph Goppel, a secondary school teacher, passed on his passion for photography[1] . After graduating from the Von-Müller-Gymnasiums in 2018[2], Valentin took part in an internship with Florian Hammerich, a local photographer, and exhibits his first photos.[3][4]. Since 2019, he studies photojournalism and documentary photography at Hannover University of Applied Sciences.[4][5].

That same year, he produced his first documentary series, “Allá, en la pampa”, about the lack of prospects for a group of young people living in Maria Susana, an isolated Argentine town in the middle of the pampas, the quintessence of solitude. "There's nothing to do. Fields, cows and electricity pylons."[6]. This work won the Vonovia Award für Fotografie in 2020.[7], and gained him his first publications in the press.

In 2020, he documented the effects of confinement on young people in his city during the Covid-19 pandemic, hoping to explore the impact of the pandemic on his own generation - that of young adults who still have "everything to build."[8].

These photos were published in the weekly Die Zeit[9] and Der Spiegel[4]. This work, entitled “Between the Years”, won the Leica Newcomer Oskar-Barnack Award in 2022.[8] and the World Report Award at the Lodi Festival of Ethical Photography[10].

The series was published as "Zwischen den Jahren"[11] by british publisher GOST books in 2024.

In 2023, he won the Urban Newcomer grant by Google at the Photo festival Visa pour l'image[12]
