UWorld is a privately owned, global education technology (EdTech) company. It provides digital and print study materials and test-preparation resources to high school students, undergraduates, graduates, and professionals preparing for high-stakes exams in accounting, finance, graduate school, high school, law, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy.

Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani founded the company in 2003.[1]. It is headquartered in Coppell, Texas, and has an additional office in Hyderabad, India. The company has 750+ employees and has served more than 5 million users[2].

History

UWorld started as a project in the dorm room of Pemmasani, a medical resident in Pennsylvania.[citation needed] In 2001, Pemmasani began writing case-based learning questions that he tried to publish as a book.[citation needed] After posting them in online forums, he received an overwhelmingly positive demand for more. In 2003, he founded USMLEWorld[3] with the help of his brother, Ravi Pemmasani, and wife, Sriratna Koneru, who were graduate students at Virginia Tech[4]. The company launched its first resources for the USMLE Step 2 exam in 2004, and rounded out its USMLE coverage by the end of 2006[5].

During these years, the company continued to refine its USMLE products while releasing study materials for the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) exam in 2012[6] and American Board of Family Medicine’s (ABFM) exam in 2013[7].

2015 Rebrand to UWorld

USMLEWorld rebranded to UWorld in 2015 to signal its commitment to creating top-quality test prep materials beyond those for the USMLE and ABIM/ABFM exams[8]. In 2015, UWorld released content coverage for aspiring nurses taking the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN)[9] and National Council Licensure Examination-Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN)[10].

In 2017, UWorld launched products for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)[11], SAT exam[12], and ACT exam[13].

Acquisitions and Expansion

In 2018, UWorld acquired Roger CPA Review[14] to prepare accountants for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination (CPA Exam). The company also relocated its headquarters to the Cypress Waters business park in Coppell, Texas, a suburb of Dallas.

In 2019, UWorld launched its physician assistant product for the Physician Assistant National Certifying/Recertifying Exam (PANCE/PANRE)[15]. The company also surpassed 250 employees[16].

In 2020, UWorld acquired RxPrep[17] and Themis Bar Review[18] to expand into the pharmacy and law markets. The company’s new pharmacy products covered the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX), Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE), and California Practice Standards and Jurisprudence Examination (CPJE)[19], while its new law division covered the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), Master of Laws (LLM) support, and Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE)[20].

UWorld also entered the finance industry by releasing preparation materials for Level 1 of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Exam[21]. The company’s medical division expanded its Step 2 product to cover National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) shelf exams[22]. For educators, UWorld launched its Learning Platform (LP) assignment and insight tools[23].

UWorld opened an office in India in 2020[24] and surpassed 350 employees[7].

In 2021, UWorld expanded its nursing portfolio by releasing study materials for the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) exam[25]. It also added Advanced Placement (AP) support for high school students and educators[26].

In 2022, UWorld’s medical division released preparation resources for the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination of the United States (COMLEX-USA)[27]. The company also expanded its office space in India and Coppell, surpassing 550 employees[28].

In 2023, UWorld expanded its accounting, finance, and business resources by acquiring Wiley’s Efficient Learning portfolio[29]. This bolstered the company’s CPA and CFA products and introduced preparation materials for the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exam and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) exam.

In 2024, UWorld acquired Aspen Publishing[30] to build its legal division’s MBE Question Bank (QBank) and Themis Bar Review courses. The company surpassed 750 employees. Around this time, UWorld surpassed 5 million product users[7].

International Efforts

Since 2023, UWorld’s medical division has launched 2 international products. The first is tailored to medical students in the United Kingdom preparing for the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT)[31]. The second is a global medical education question bank that is not tailored to a specific licensing exam[32].

Philanthropy

In 2022, UWorld launched its philanthropic arm, UWorld Cares, a company-wide commitment to drive success in education by investing in the communities it serves. The initiative extended the company’s previous philanthropic efforts by focusing on three pillars of charitable giving: community grants, employee giving, and employee volunteerism[33].

UWorld partners with community organizations to advance educational programs, such as creating a stronger pathway to higher education, addressing skills gaps in the workforce, and removing barriers to higher education.

Through 2025, more than $5 million has been granted in annual UWorld product scholarships to aspiring accountants, lawyers, graduate school students, and financial professionals. UWorld employees have volunteered over 850 hours in their local communities[34].

In its nursing division, UWorld is the exclusive provider of NCLEX preparation resources for the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA)[35]. It also offers membership discounts to the Canadian Nursing Students’ Association (CNSA)[36].

In its medical division, UWorld is the exclusive private partner of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. The company has granted over $70,000 in financial support and product awards. The foundation is one of the U.S.’s most established undergraduate scholarships for future leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

In its finance division, UWorld has entered into a collaborative global strategic partnership agreement with the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) to deliver accurate, high-quality resources related to the CMA exam[37]
