Trinity Basketball Club is the official basketball club of Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. The club fields competitive men's and women's teams and participates in university competitions and national leagues under the governance of Basketball Ireland. The club is a recognized sports organisation within Trinity College Dublin. Also known as Dublin University Basketball Club, Trinity Basketball participates in multiple university and national competitions.

History

[edit]

The club traces its roots to the early development of college basketball in Ireland. In 1945, the Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland (ABAI) was founded, and Trinity (then known as Dublin University) was among the first college teams to emerge. By 1951, Trinity was one of five universities—along with University College Dublin, Royal College of Surgeons, Queen’s University Belfast, and University College Galway—that competed in the inaugural National Intervarsity Championship at Portobello Barracks, Dublin.

Teams and Programmes

[edit]

Trinity Basketball Club supports a range of competitive and development programmes for students at various levels. The men’s [1] and women’s varsity teams [2] represent the university in the Irish Colleges League, while fresher teams offer opportunities for first-year undergraduates to compete and develop. The club also fields a men’s team in the Basketball Ireland Dublin League (BIDL) and Dublin Men’s Basketball Board (DMBB) competitions.[3] In partnership with Meteors Basketball Club, Trinity supports the Trinity Meteors, a women’s team that competes in the Basketball Ireland Super League. [4][5] [6] A development squad provides additional training and match experience for players. The club also runs a social basketball programme, which includes 3x3 leagues, tournaments, and open recreational sessions.

Notable Achievements

[edit]

In 2025, the Trinity College Dublin women’s varsity basketball team won both the Division 1 intervarsity championship[7] and the Division 1 league [8]. That same year, the team was named Student Sport Ireland Team of the Year [9] and received the Team of the Year award at the Trinity Sports Awards. [10]

The women’s team also won the Division 1 varsity championship in 2024[11] and were recognised with the Performance of the Year award at that year’s Trinity Sports Awards. [12]

In 2023, the men’s team won the Division 2 league and the Division 2 intervarsity championship.[13]

The club was named Club of the Year at the Trinity Sports Awards in 2020. Edel Thornton was also named the Trinity Sportsperson of the Year at the ceremony.[14]

Club Activities and Culture

[edit]

Beyond competitive play, Trinity Basketball Club engages in a variety of activities that contribute to the university’s sporting community and student life. The club participates annually in the Colours Game against University College Dublin, an intervarsity rivalry event.[15] The club has also participated in international tournaments, including events held in Paris, providing players with opportunities to compete abroad. [16] Off the court, the club organises social events such as pub quizzes, scavenger hunts, and pub nights, which foster team cohesion and student engagement. Additionally, Trinity Basketball is involved in community outreach, including coaching initiatives and partnerships with local organisations such as the NEIC Trojans, aiming to increase access to sport among underrepresented groups.
