Trinco Chess Academy is a chess training institution based in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, established on 12 March 2022. The academy focuses on promoting chess among children and youth in the Eastern Province, Sri Lanka, developing rated players, and creating entrepreneurial opportunities through chess education.
History
[edit]Founding and Early Years
[edit]The idea of the academy was initiated by AFM D. Dilukshan, a G.C.E. Advanced Level candidate who sought alternative income streams while waiting for his exam results. With guidance from retired Assistant Director of Education Mrs. R. Ravindrakumar, and motivated by the lack of active chess clubs in Trincomalee, he conducted a SWOT analysis and launched the academy with five initial students—total strangers at the time.
Initially, classes were conducted only on weekends while Dilukshan maintained a 7–5 job. After being selected to university, he continued coaching by traveling over 10 hours every weekend via two buses. The first year saw 100 students enroll, followed by over 200 students in the second year.
Development and Growth
[edit]The academy gained momentum after students began participating and winning in tournaments, particularly peaking in November 2022. This success attracted a wider audience, including youth from surrounding villages. The involvement of the director’s friends, siblings, and their networks helped manage logistics, student management, and event organization.

Logo
[edit]The logo of Trinco Chess Academy creatively integrates the letters T, C, and A into the form of a knight chess piece. The eye of the knight symbolizes the map of Trincomalee, representing the Academy’s vision of being a guiding force for chess in the region.
