Draft:Transmedial Space

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Transmedial Space is a concept in media philosophy and Transdisciplinarity coined by the Swiss-Colombian artist and philosopher Juan Mauricio Schmid Bello in his 2022 work, Eingang/Ausgang. The term defines the resulting social environment created by the Transmedial Procedure of the digital age.

Schmid Bello argues that Transmedial Space is the structural and social blueprint for the contemporary digital public sphere, serving as the foundational architectural system for the Smart Polis (Smart Cities) from the 2020s onwards.[1]

Conceptual Definition and Mechanism

[edit]

The Transmedial Space is neither purely physical nor purely digital, but a unified environment where the rules of Transmediality govern social practice.

Social Architecture

[edit]

Schmid Bello utilizes Brandon LaBelle's concept of "social architecture"—originally applied to sound and urban environments—to argue that the Transmedial Space is the context-dependent structure created by the interactions within the network. It is not defined by physical borders (X-axis) or rigid hierarchies (Y-axis), but by the underlying Inframediality (Z-axis).

The space is built by the cooperation of media and disciplines (Transdisciplinarity), where the condition of this collaboration itself is the subject of inquiry.[2]

Driven by the Nomadic Internet

[edit]

The Transmedial Space is operationally dependent on the Nomadic Internet (Schmid Bello's primary Transmedial Procedure), which guarantees two essential characteristics for the space to function:[3]

  • Simultaneity: Interactions occur in real-time across geographically non-localized positions.
  • Interactivity: Multiple parties can engage equally to shape the shared content and narrative via a common **digital code**.

Dominant Social Practice

[edit]

Within this space, the dominant mode of existence is Digital Presence. This presence is primarily expressed through Performative Intervention (Thesis 5), particularly via social media. This practice allows the individual to intervene directly in the Transmedial Space to generate "truth" and "cultural capital" (Coining Knowledge), thereby validating their existence within the networked reality.[4]

Epochal Significance

[edit]

The establishment of the Transmedial Space as the primary social environment is integral to the Transmodern Turn. It transitions the focus of societal organization from traditional, localized governance to a digitally informed, context-dependent "Smart Polis."

Schmid Bello identifies the theoretical and social contexts of the 2010s (characterized by the Nomadic Internet and initial digital presence) as the "building blocks" for the full deployment of the Transmedial Space as the new urban fabric (Smart Cities) in the 2020s.[5]
