Tim Cartmell

Tim Cartmell is a Canadian politician, engineer, and small business owner who has served as the Edmonton City Councillor for Ward pihêsiwin since 2017. He is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with a background in structural design and project management. In November 2024, Cartmell announced his candidacy for mayor in the upcoming 2025 Edmonton municipal election.[1]

Early Life and Education

Cartmell was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He resides in South Edmonton with his wife Cathy, where they raised their three children. He holds a Master of Engineering degree and is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng).[2]

Professional Career

Before entering public office, Cartmell worked on major infrastructure and building projects in Alberta, including the Edmonton Expo Centre and several seniors' lodges for the Greater Edmonton Foundation. His experience includes roles with Alberta’s Treasury Board, APEGA, and various engineering firms.[3]

Political Career

Cartmell was first elected to Edmonton City Council in 2017, representing Ward 9.[4] Following the 2021 municipal election, he began representing the renamed Ward pihêsiwin.[5]

During his tenure, Cartmell has focused on transportation and infrastructure projects in Southwest Edmonton, such as the Terwillegar Drive Expansion, Rabbit Hill Road twinning, and widening of Anthony Henday Drive.[6]

He supports Edmonton’s City Plan, particularly the development of 15-minute communities. As a mayoral candidate, Cartmell has highlighted fiscal responsibility and infrastructure delivery as key priorities.[7]

He has served in roles including:

  • Chair of the Utility Committee
  • Member of the Executive Committee
  • Alternate representative to the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board
  • Board member for Fort Edmonton Park Management Company
  • Advisor to the Sport Edmonton Council
  • Member of the Board for Do North Events

Community Involvement

Cartmell has over 30 years of volunteer experience, including community league leadership, coaching minor hockey, and serving on APEGA discipline and standards committees.[6]

Awards include:

  • APEGA Summit Award for Community Service (2013)
  • Engineers Canada Meritorious Service Award for Community Service (2014)[8]

Personal Life

Cartmell lives in South Edmonton with his wife Cathy. They have three adult children: Matthew, Riana, and Justin.[6]
