Professor Tham Nimal-Raj (born July 5, 1956) is a British Sri Lankan medical professional known for his work in healthcare management, medical education, and diagnostic services.[1]He is the founder and managing director of the Essex Medical Society, where he has been involved in promoting diagnostic and medical services in the region.[2] Nimal-Raj also serves as the Provost and Professor of Anatomy and Primary Care at New Vision University in Tbilisi, Georgia, where he is involved in academic leadership and medical education.[3]Throughout his career, Nimal-Raj has been actively involved in establishing community-based diagnostic services and medical clinics focusing on wellness and preventive care. He has also held multiple directorships in medical and diagnostic service organizations, contributing to healthcare initiatives locally and internationally.
Education and Early Career
[edit]Professor Tham Nimal-Raj completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB, ChB) in 1984 and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) with honors at the University of Ife, Nigeria. He subsequently earned a Master of Science (MSc) degree from the University of London and a Diploma in Nuclear Medicine. His further qualifications include a Faculty Diploma in Family Planning and Reproductive Health from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a Postgraduate Certificate in Prescribing from the Conjoined University of Greenwich.
He also obtained a Certificate of Safety in the Administration of Sedation from Darent Valley Hospital and a Foundation Course in Acupuncture from the British Medical Acupuncture Society. Additional certifications include a Postgraduate Certificate in Diabetes Care from the University of Wolverhampton, a BMU from the University of Portsmouth, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Diabetes, Metabolism, and Inflammation from the University of London.[4]

[edit]Professor Tham Nimal-Raj is a British Sri Lankan medical professional with a diverse and impactful career in both clinical practice and healthcare management. He has held multiple key roles within the NHS, including serving Chief Clinical Officer, CCG Lead, and Clinical Director, where he focused on improving patient care, cancer care, and safeguarding vulnerable populations.[5]He also served as Prescribing Lead, optimizing NHS prescribing practices. He is the Founder and Managing Director of the Essex Medical Society (EMS), which promotes collaboration among healthcare professionals. He has also held directorial positions at Lakeside Medical Diagnostics and Essex Heart, focusing on community cardiac services.[5]
Academically, he serves as Provost and Professor of Anatomy and Primary Care at New Vision University in Tbilisi, Georgia. Throughout his career, Nimal-Raj has contributed to healthcare innovations, including expanding community-based diagnostic services and publishing research on infertility treatments.[6]In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, he led clinical practice efforts within the Essex GP Community Hub and helped secure personal protective equipment globally.

Their son is a Senior Recruiter in the IT sector and an MIT graduate, who has established a successful career in technology recruitment, reflecting the family's strong commitment to professional excellence. Mother is direct in fine arts and of oriental examination. World renown Carnatic musician/director Ambika Thamotherm.
