Tenebrous Press (10p) is an indie publisher of horror and new weird literature based in Portland, Oregon, in the United States. It was founded by Matt Blairstone. It is run by Blairstone and its editor-in-chief, Alex Woodroe. The first book published by Tenebrous Press was the eco-horror anthology Green Inferno (2021) which was published after a successful crowdfunding campaign via the website Kickstarter.[1]

Its logo is a coin which bears the image of a skull wearing a laurel wreath next to the text "10p".

Works published by Tenebrous Press have received reviews and coverage in outlets including Booklist[2], Reactor[3], and The Washington Post.[4]

History

[edit]

Tenebrous Press was founded by horror and comic writer Matt Blairstone in 2021 out of a frustration at a lull in the comic publishing industry caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.[5] It funded its first anthology, Green Inferno, through the crowdfunding website Kickstarter.[6] In an early interview, Blairstone called Green Inferno, "simultaneously the trial balloon to see if I know what the hell I’m doing, and the announcement that Tenebrous Press has arrived."[5] The anthology included a short story by Alex Woodroe, who would later become Tenebrous Press' editor-in-chief. Woodroe had given up on submitting her writing to publishers and did not even know about Green Inferno until friends of hers revealed that they had submitted the story "Depth of the Water" to the anthology on her behalf and that it had been accepted.[7]

Blairstone recruited Woodroe as the editor of Tenebrous Press' second anthology, In Somnio.[7] He later said that this was the point when "Tebebrous was fully formed".[8] Woodroe also coined the term "new weird horror" to describe the genre focus of Tenebrous Press, a term which was later adapted to "new weird lit" in order to encompass other genres.[9]

2022 novella One Hand to Hold, One Hand to Carve by M. Shaw was Tenebrous Press' first single-author publication.[8] In the same year, several Tenebrous Press publications were shortlisted for the 2022 Shirley Jackson Award. Tim McGregor's Lure for the novella award, Your Body is Not Your Body for edited anthology, and "Brother Meternitas" (a story from that anthology by Viktor Athelstan) for short fiction.[10][7]

In 2023, horror and speculative fiction publisher Dread Stone Press closed down. Twice a year, it had published pairs of horror novelettes in a single volume under the name Split Scream. When Dread Stone Press closed, the Split Scream branding and format was passed on to Tenebrous Press. It began publishing the series (still edited by Dread Stone founder Alex Ebenstein) with the fourth volume, featuring novelettes from D. Matthew Urban and Holly Lyn Walrath.[11][7]

After a successful crowdfunding campaign in 2024[12], Tenebrous Press began publishing The Skull & Laurel, a magazine of new weird short stories. The magazine is edited by Cameron Howard, who also edited Thank You for Joining the Algorithm, described as an "issue #0" of the magazine that would become The Skull & Laurel.[7] Thank You for Joining the Algorithm was themed around interactions between humanity and technology, and was published in protest against the impact of generative artificial intelligence on the arts. Proceeds from the magazine were donated to the Algorithmic Justice League and the European Guild of Artificial Intelligence Regulation, organisations which advocate for regulation of AI in the arts.[13][14]

Repeat Collaborators

[edit]

In several cases, Tenebrous Press has published multiple works by the same authors or artists. Repeat collaborators include:

  • Artist Echo Echo, who has provided cover and interior illustrations for multiple projects, including interior art for all issues of Split Scream published by Tenebrous Press.[15]
  • Cameron Howard, Braulio Tellez, and Samir Sirk Morató who respectively served as editor, designer, and interior artist for Thank You for Joining the Algorithm and The Skull & Laurel.[14]
  • Carson Winter, author of three novels (one as co-author with Jolie Toomajan) and a novelette published in volume 1 of Split Scream (originally published by Dread Stone Press).
  • Valkyrie Loughcrewe, author of two novellas published by Tenebrous Press.[16]
  • M. Shaw, author of the novella One Hand to Hold, One Hand to Carve as well as Tenebrous Press' first collection of short stories by a single author.
