  • Comment: This comes over as promotional. Under WP:DEPENDENTCOVERAGE it's actually quite hard for a patent device to get an article. What we would be looking for is something like a genuinely independent review by a science publication or dental publication. At the moment all the links seem to go back to the manufacturers. The OMed article is promotional too.
Can the submitting editor also confirm whether they have any connection with the product or firm? That's not necessarily a problem but it does need to be declared via WP:COI. ChrysGalley (talk) 17:43, 21 October 2025 (UTC)

SyncSplint is a dental appliance intended for use with clear aligner therapy. It has been presented at international orthodontic congresses and in accredited continuing education courses. The invention is covered by an international patent application published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and has an academic publication with a DOI in Zenodo (CERN/OpenAIRE).[1][2]

Overview

[edit]

SyncSplint is a removable U-shaped splint that covers the maxillary and mandibular arches and is worn together with clear aligners. It is fabricated via digital workflows (intraoral scanning, virtual orthodontic setup, 3D printing). The device applies additional controlled inter-arch forces, while the aligners stabilize tooth positions and prevent overcorrection. Patients are instructed to wear SyncSplint with aligners for at least 60 minutes per day in addition to aligner wear.[3]

Development

[edit]

The concept has been developed by clinicians and researchers associated with Dentalign and the Medical University of Sofia (Assoc. Prof. Miroslava Dinkova and Orlin Atanasov). The name “SyncSplint” is a registered trademark. Patent protection has been pursued internationally: a priority filing in Bulgaria (BG 113539) led to international application PCT/BG2023/000014 (23 May 2023), published by WIPO as WO 2023/225724 A1.[4] National-stage entries include the United States application US 18/865,101 (filed 12 November 2024; title: Method and Apparatus for Orthodontic Treatment) and a filing before the European Patent Office.[5]

Clinical applications

[edit]
  • Treatment duration: additional inter-arch forces alongside aligner movements are reported to reduce overall treatment time.
  • Arch synchronization: coordination of upper and lower arch movements with a focus on occlusal contacts.
  • Aligner adjustment support: facilitates the initial adjustment of each subsequent aligner.
  • Complex cases: more than one SyncSplint may be used during treatment in severe malocclusions.

Accredited courses have presented completed cases with approximately six-month protocols (12–14 aligners per arch plus SyncSplint) as well as longer courses of 12–15 months, concluding with removable or fixed retention.[6][7]

Independent mentions and market presence

[edit]

SyncSplint has been included as part of orthodontic treatment packages with clear aligners on the Bulgarian healthcare platform Omed.bg, where an independent clinician offers the service “aligners + SyncSplint”. This demonstrates that the appliance is being used outside the official communication channels of the developer.[8]

In addition, SyncSplint is mentioned in professional profiles of dentists on the platform Superdoc.bg. For example, in the profile of Dr. Lora Lozanova, the appliance is listed as part of her expertise in hybrid aligner treatments.[9]

Publications

[edit]

A clinical case report describing the combined use of SyncSplint with clear aligners was published in the peer-reviewed Norwegian Journal of Development of the International Science in 2025. The report documents the application of the appliance in orthodontic treatment and highlights its potential to improve synchronization between the upper and lower arches.[10]

In addition, two technical and clinical briefs are archived on Zenodo, providing further background, indications, and workflow information regarding SyncSplint.[11][12]

Professional recognition

[edit]

In July 2022, the concept was presented as a poster at the European Aligner Society (EAS) Summer Meeting in Porto, Portugal; a certificate of poster presentation was issued.[13] In October 2022, SyncSplint was presented at the annual Italian Society of Orthodontics (SIDO) Congress in Florence.[14]

Technology

[edit]

The appliance is manufactured using CAD/CAM processes. Digital models are used to fabricate the device through additive manufacturing with biocompatible resins.[15]

Context in orthodontics

[edit]

Clear aligner therapy is widely used in orthodontics, but limitations such as reduced inter-arch control and potentially longer treatment time compared with fixed appliances have been reported.[16][17] Attachments and auxiliaries are often used to increase aligner effectiveness.[18] SyncSplint has been proposed as an adjunctive appliance providing controlled inter-arch forces without extensive use of attachments.[19]
