Starting Quarterback is a 2025 American action-comedy short film written by David Vorderstrasse and directed by Parker Viale. The film follows two former high school football rivals—now working as CIA operatives—as they reunite to take down a violent drug cartel. Mixing espionage antics with locker room grudges, the film balances absurdist humor and stylized action in a genre mash-up.

The film is scheduled for a limited theatrical release in California on August 15, 2025, with a Blu-ray release and digital streaming to follow later in the year.^[3]^[4]

Plot

Years after high school, washed-up quarterbacks Dave Krugle and Matt Anderson have taken very different paths—until fate (and the CIA) throw them back together. Assigned to the same covert operation, the two must overcome their petty rivalry to take down a dangerous cartel threatening national security. With more brawn than brains and almost no espionage training, Krugle and Anderson stumble through shootouts, botched stakeouts, and unresolved drama from a high school game they still won't shut up about.^[5]

Production

Starting Quarterback was produced independently by Parker Viale (Parkerfilm) and David Vorderstrasse (Ravenite Productions). Principal photography took place in the San Francisco Bay Area in late 2024 into early 2025. The film was shot with a focus on dynamic camerawork and comedic timing, blending action film aesthetics with exaggerated character drama.^[5]^[6]

Release

The film will be released in a limited number of California theaters on August 15, 2025. A Blu-ray release is planned with a limited quantity available, followed by a wider release on streaming platforms. Official release dates will be announced on the film’s website and on the Starting Quarterback Instagram and Facebook pages.^[6]
