Spotle is a web-based daily music guessing game developed by FlatWhite Studios and created by friends Tommy Rennolds and Paul Pursifull. Launched in early 2022, the game challenges players to identify a mystery musical artist within ten guesses using color-coded feedback inspired by popular word and puzzle games.[1]
Gameplay
[edit]
Each day, Spotle features a single mystery musical artist that is the same for all players worldwide. Players enter their guesses one at a time, and the game provides visual feedback using colored tiles to indicate how closely their input matches the correct answer.[2] A green tile indicates that an attribute is a match, while a yellow tile shows that an attribute is close to a match. A gray title indicates the attribute is incorrect.
The objective is to correctly identify the artist in ten or fewer tries. Spotle combines aspects of deduction, musical knowledge, and daily competition, making it popular with both casual listeners and music aficionados.
Development and Popularity
[edit]Spotle was created by Tommy Rennolds and Paul Pursifull, longtime friends with a shared passion for music and games. The pair developed the game under the banner of FlatWhite Studios, aiming to create a simple but addictive game for music lovers.
The game saw a spike in popularity in 2024 after Anthony Fantano, American music critic and YouTuber, began playing and sharing Spotle with his large online audience.[3] This exposure brought the game to a wider audience and helped solidify its place among the growing trend of daily challenge games.
User Statistics
[edit]As of February 2025, Spotle.io had received approximately 2.08 million visits, with the average session duration being 8 minutes and 50 seconds. The majority of the traffic came from the United States (65.26%), followed by Brazil (13.84%) and the United Kingdom (4.49%). The audience composition was approximately 58.69% male and 41.31% female, with the largest age group being 18-24 year olds.
