Source Macchiato is an independent French video game development collective founded in 2022, specializing in porting and creating titles for the Nintendo Wii U. Initially formed around an unofficial remake of Portal, the group became known in 2023 for its release of FNaF: Wii U Edition[1], a homebrew recreation of Five Nights at Freddy's. Since then, Source Macchiato has expanded its activities to include original narrative projects and collaborations with other developers within the Wii U homebrew scene. The group primarily uses the Unity engine to produce games aimed at extending the console’s independent development ecosystem.

History

[edit]

Source Macchiato was formed in 2022 by Alyx Lihoreau under the name Portal Wii U Team to develop a Wii U demo of Portal using the Unity engine.[2] A first public video showing early development was posted by Alyx Lihoreau on December 9th 2022.[3]

In April 2023 Alexis L. (online alias shiro-SATA) joined the project and later became part of the group's leadership. Shortly after the demo release the team rebranded as Source Macchiato.[2]

In late 2023 Source Macchiato began work on a Wii U remake of Five Nights at Freddy's and released that project on December 5th 2023. Omar Hasaballa joined around the same period as lead game designer and Italian translator.[1]

In November 2024 the studio announced a sequel remake, Five Nights at Freddy's 2: Wii U Edition, developed in collaboration with The Latte Team and published as a joint project by the merged group The Latte Macchiato. A teaser trailer was published on November 5th 2024 and the project was released on February 1st 2025.[4][5]

In March 2025 the collective announced and shortly afterwards released a Wii U edition of the psychological visual novel Milk Outside a Bag of Milk Outside a Bag of Milk; the release appeared on April 5th 2025.[6][7]

In June 2025 Source Macchiato announced an original title, A Show She Never Watched., via a YouTube community post and its Discord server. The project page and a short description were later published on the studio website. No release date has been confirmed.[8][9]
