Sonic Galactic is an upcoming platform game developed by Starteam. It is a fan game based on Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and an imagining of a 32-bit Sonic game released for the Sega Saturn.[1][2] The first demo was released in 2020 and the second demo was released on January 1, 2025.[3]
Set after Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble,[‡ 1] the game follows Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Fang and a new character: Tunnel—an anthropomorphic mole—who have to stop another one of Eggman's nefarious schemes on the mysterious Illusion Island.[4]
Gameplay
[edit]This section needs expansion. You can help by adding to it. (March 2025) |
Like traditional 2D Sonic games, Sonic Galactic is a side-scrolling platformer. The player can control one of five characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Fang, and Tunnel, each with distinct abilities.[5] Sonic retains his abilities from previous 2D Sonic games, with the addition of a wall kick.[5] Tails retains his ability to fly for a short time by spinning his twin tails like a helicopter rotor. Knuckles retains his ability to glide and climb walls. Tunnel can dig into the ground and or walls and launch himself out of them.[2]
The game is structured into a series of zones, though there is also an optional tutorial level.[5] Each zone contains two acts, with a miniboss in the first act and a regular boss fight in the second act. As of the second demo, there are three playable zones. The game contains the same roster of elemental power-ups from previous Sonic games.[5]
Like in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994), there are giant rings hidden around zones which lead to 3D special stages where the player can attempt to collect a Galactic Gem.[5] Like in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), the player does this by collecting a certain number of rings within a time limit.[3]
Plot
[edit]After the events of Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble, Doctor Eggman, desperate to restore his virtually destroyed army, detects an energy reading from an unknown location—Illusion Island—which had randomly reappeared. Doing some research, he finds that a meteor that had crashed there contains tons of energy; he heads to the mysterious island to harness said energy.[‡ 1]
Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Fang, after hearing rumors, take off to see what Eggman is up to. At the island, they met Tunnel—an anthropomorphic mole who is native to Illusion Island—who joins forces with the group. To nullify Eggman's power, they need the seven Galactic Gems that are scattered across the island.[‡ 1]
Reception
[edit]The demos for Sonic Galactic have received positive reception. The game is favorably compared to Sonic Mania (2017). John Linneman of Digital Foundry states that the game is "obscenely well made" and "it could stand as an official Sega product when complete."[6] Game Rant notes, "While it's currently only available as a demo, it's already gaining acclaim."[4] Furthermore, they state that it could be a Sonic Mania sequel.[3][4]
