Smash Summit, more simply refered to as Summit, was an invitational-style Super Smash Bros. tournament series hosted by Beyond the Summit (or BTS). The first iteration of the series was in 2015, primarily focusing on Super Smash Bros. Melee. The first iteration featuring Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, titled Smash Ultimate Summit, was in 2019.
With Smash Summit, BTS aimed to create a "behind the scenes" style tournament, showcasing a different side of top players that the community hadn't seen before,[1] by incorporating fun-side events, interviews, and sketches, while also holding the main Singles and Doubles events. The last tournament of the series, Smash Ultimate Summit 6, was held in 2023.
History
[edit]Melee
[edit]The first iteration of the tournament, Smash Summit, was held in Los Angeles, California at the BTS House, starting on November 5, 2015, and concluding on November 8, 2015. At the time, the tournament had the largest prize pool of any Smash Bros. tournament ever[2], with $32,929 going to the Singles bracket and $3,000 going to the Doubles bracket. Armada, known as one of the best Melee players of all time[3], won the Singles bracket, defeating Mang0 in Grand Finals.[4]
The series returned the next year for Smash Summit 2, which ran from April 21, 2015, to April 24, 2015. This iteration was the first that acclaimed player Hungrybox attended, as he couldn't compete in the first iteration due to a work conflict. Hungrybox had won four consecutive events prior to Smash Summit 2, making a him a contender for the best player in the world. When asked his opinion, Armada said "It was a little unfair to give Hungrybox the number one rank before Smash Summit 2--as some were saying. If he won this event, then he deserves the throne, which is why I wanted to win this so bad."[5] Armada ultimately secured the win, defeating Hungrybox in Grand Finals.
