(Latin) (letter) small capital reversed R (ᴙ, lowercase only)[1] is a letter of the Latin script.[1] It is based off of a reversed small capital version of R.

This letter is only used in phonetics, and that could be the reason it is lowercase only, and additionally, it is encoded in Unicode under the block "Phonetic Extensions". [2]

It is similar in appearance to the Cyrillic letter Я я, but is distinct from it. [3]

Small capital reversed n

[edit]

There is also a similar character small capital reversed n (ᴎ ᴻ, lowercase and superscript only), which is used in the Finno-Ugric transcription [3] to represent the voiceless velar nasal [3] /ŋ̊/, which is similar to the pronunciation of the ng in the word anything, but voiceless. This letter looks similar to the Cyrillic letter И и.

History

[edit]

In the Finno-Ugric transcription, rotated letters indicate reduced sounds, such as shorter vowels. Small capital letters denote voicelessness. However, ɹ is already used for the alveolar approximant in the IPA and couldn't be used for a reduced alveolar trill, while is used for a devoiced alveolar approximant in the Finno-Ugric transcription, so mirroring is used as a last-resort substitute for rotation.

Usage

[edit]

The small capital reversed R (ᴙ) symbol has the following uses.

Phonetics (rare)

[edit]

It is possible that it is rarely used in phonetics for an epiglottal trill,[5] although this usage seems to be not well-documented.

Finno-Ugric transcription

[edit]

It is used in the Finno-Ugric transcription to represent a weakly trilled [r] [3] [5] (approximately [r͉] in the (ext)IPA).

Obsolete IPA

[edit]

It is an obsolete International Phonetic Alphabet symbol for a voiceless uvular trill,[5] replaced by ʀ̥, [5] which is a diacritic combination of the symbol ʀ [note 1] and a ring diacritic ◌̥, which indicates voicelessness.
