Simran Kaur is a New Zealand social entrepreneur, financial education provider, podcaster, and author. She is the founder of a financial education platform called Friends That Invest (previously Girls That Invest), which was launched in 2020.[1]

Childhood and education

[edit]

Kaur grew up in New Zealand and first studied to become an optometrist, obtaining a Bachelor of Optometry from the University of Auckland.[2] She worked in optometry, then completed a certificate in Financial Markets through Yale University.[3]

In 2016 she launched The Indian Feminist, an Instagram-based media project alongside Kaur Virk Harsharin. The account discussed gender roles and social expectations among people of Indian origin living outside India.[4] [5]

Career

[edit]

In 2020, Kaur and her childhood friend Sonya Gupthan launched the Girls That Invest podcast to educate millennial and Generation Z women on investing and money.[6] The podcast appeared in top business podcast charts in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.[7] The project later expanded into additional digital formats, including online courses and a weekly newsletter covering investing and personal finance.[8]

In 2022, Kaur published her first book, Girls That Invest, published by Wiley[9] and later that year delivered a TEDx talk titled How Women Can Invest in the Stock Market.[10]

In March 2023, Kaur was asked to present at an International Women’s Day event held at the UK Houses of Parliament which focused on financial equality.[11][12]

The platform later rebranded as Friends That Invest.[13] In 2025, Wiley published a revised edition of Kaur’s book under the new title Friends That Invest: Your Guide to Financial Independence Through Shares and Stocks.[14]

Recognition

[edit]

Kaur’s work involving financial education and social entrepreneurship has earned her recognition. In 2022 she was featured on the Marie Claire Future Shapers list,[15] and received a spot on the 2023 Asia list in the Content Creators category.[16] In 2024, she was named the Young New Zealander of the Year in recognition of her contributions to financial education and social entrepreneurship.[17] The following year Friends That Invest was listed in Deloitte New Zealand’s Fast 50 index.[18]
