Igor Soloshenko (born 5 June 1975, Uman, Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian Kyokushin karate master, 5th Dan, shihan, sports master, and international category referee. He is a fifteen-time Ukrainian champion in the "kata" division of Kyokushin karate.[1][failed verification]

Early Life and Education

Soloshenko was born in Uman, Ukraine.[2][failed verification] While studying at Uman State Pedagogical University, he founded Kyokushin karate club Spartak in 1995, beginning his coaching.[3][failed verification] By that time, the club had 200 students of different ages.[citation needed]

He earned his black belt ranks as follows:

  • 1st Dan – 1997
  • 2nd Dan – 2001
  • 3rd Dan – 2006
  • 4th Dan – 2015
  • 5th Dan – 2023. Test completed in Japan under Shihan Kenji Midori, President of the International Shinkyokushinkai Karate Organization.[4]

Soloshenko's early instructors included Volodymyr Hutsal, Viktor Lyashchenko (Vice President of the National Federation of Kyokushin Karate of Ukraine), and Oleksandr Honcharenko (President of the National Federation). During his visit to Japan, he trained at the dojo of 2003 World Champion Konihiro Suzuki [ja]. Also, he practiced Shotokan karate under Volodymyr Savchenko, President of Traditional Karate Do in Ukraine.[5]

Coaching and Organizational Work

On 8 January 2002, Soloshenko founded the Cherkasy Regional Federation of Kyokushin Karate. He participated in both "kumite" and "kata" competitions, becoming a champion and medalist in Ukraine twenty times.[6] From 2002 to 2009, he was the Ukrainian men's kata champion and a member of the Ukrainian national team, competing in seven European Championships.[7]

Soloshenko hosted 60 local and regional tournaments in Uman, Ukraine, including five Ukrainian Championships for men and women in Kyokushin karate where he was the main referee.[8]

Over the years of coaching, Soloshenko has trained the following athletes who went on to win national and international prizes at competitions:

  • Yaroslav Lyushniak – three-time Champion of Ukraine; participant in the 2008 World Dream Cup in Tokyo; winner of international kumite tournaments in Lucerne, Switzerland (2010–2011) and Zagreb, Croatia (2010–2011), the "Best Technique" award.
  • Arkhip Kryvdiuk – Champion and medalist of the Ukrainian Championship; winner of the International Kumite Tournament in Zagreb, Croatia (2016, "Best Technique" award); World Cup champion in Kyodo Kyokushin karate in Warsaw, Poland (2017).
  • Denys Zhuravskyi – two-time medalist of the Ukrainian Championship; silver medalist at the Kyodo Kyokushin World Cup in Warsaw, Poland (2017).
  • Vadym Mazurok – bronze medalist of the 7th International Shinkyokushin Karate Championship in Kobierzyce, Poland (2017); bronze medalist at the Kyodo Kyokushin World Cup in Warsaw, Poland (2017).
  • Valeriia Yushchenko – bronze medalist at the Kyodo Kyokushin World Cup in Warsaw (2017).
  • Kateryna Slutska – multiple-time Ukrainian Champion; international tournament winner and participant in European Championships in Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Belgium.
  • Yevhen Voroniuk – Champion and medalist of Ukrainian Championships and Cups;

Career in the United States

In 2024, Soloshenko moved to the United States and continued his coaching. He established the Minnesota Shinkyokushinkai Karate Organization in Minnesota and served as a referee for the 4th and 5th American Full-Contact Karate Championships in Las Vegas (2024 and 2025). Igor Soloshenko competed in the World Karate Championship "Diamond Cup" in Minneapolis in 2024, placing 5th in kata. Soloshenko has partnered with Sensei Luis Pipo to strengthen American Shinkyokushinkai karate and prepare athletes for international competitions.[citation needed]
