Shashi Ranjan Singh (born 4 March 1973) is an Indian music composer, lyricist, and singer who is devoted to emotional and devotional music. He began his musical journey from Bihar rural areas and climbed through personal struggles and undying passion to establish himself as a phenomenon in India's music industry. Having studied psychology, Singh discovered his true passion in music and proved himself to be a creative force with hits being listed on esteemed platforms like Venus and Ultra.
Early life and background
[edit]Shashi Ranjan Singh was born in Jamshedpur, India, into a deeply religious and culturally rich family. His father, Shri Ramlao Singh , and mother, Rajkumari Devi, belonged to the Bhoomihar Brahmin community. Although born in Jamshedpur, he was brought up in Chandrati village in the Muzaffarpur district of Bihar. His upbringing was significantly influenced by his father's spiritual nature, which shaped Singh's early values and lifestyle.
At a very young age—perhaps five or six—he started to show a natural affinity for music. One childhood incident was when he had a stroke when he was seven years old, visiting his grandmother's place. At the time, his grandfather would calm him down by playing the harmonium and singing songs, and it was this that developed a greater sense of curiosity and fondness for music in young Singh.
He continued his education at C.K. High School, near his village, where he completed his secondary studies. He later pursued higher education in Fardpur and graduated from R.D.S. College with a Master’s degree in Psychology. Despite his academic achievements, his interest in music remained persistent throughout his educational journey.
Career
[edit]Although academically inclined and holding a postgraduate degree in Psychology, Singh's heart was never far from music. After completing his studies, he began his professional career as a lecturer at R.D.S. College. Despite the stability of an academic job, Singh felt unfulfilled and yearned for a more meaningful and creative pursuit.
After his marriage in 1999, he started searching for employment to maintain his family. He started working for the first time in Kolhapur in 2001 and remained there for seven years. After that, he shifted to Gonda and continued his professional career for five more years. But these experiences did not prove to be satisfactory for him, as he still felt a calling for music.
In 2012–13, after spending some time in Mandi where his office (Bajaj group) closed, Singh went back to his village and started business. This phase also did not prove to be successful financially, and he was forced to rethink his direction of life..
Personal life
[edit]Shashi Ranjan Singh is married to Hasha Singh in 1999, with whom he shares a son, Satyam Kumar, who is currently pursuing his education. Singh credits his family—both his immediate and extended family—as well as his in-laws for their unwavering support throughout his personal and professional journeys. Their encouragement has been instrumental in helping him overcome challenges and focus on his passion for music.
Struggle & Turning Point
[edit]Singh's life turned a new leaf after the failure of his business venture. Disappointed but spiritually strong, he decided to pursue his age-old passion of making his mark in the music world. He was convinced that each person is born with a purpose and music was his calling.
During this period of self-reflection, Singh went on a spiritual trip to Satna Maihar, a place he believed was blessed by the gods. He felt that the journey gave him a sense of purpose and inspired him to choose music as his career. After that, he decided to move to Mumbai, the heart of India's entertainment industry, to pursue his dream in music
Musical Journey
[edit]When he arrived in Mumbai, Singh was in a city of immense talent and competition. He was initially confused with direction, so he took up part-time jobs to keep himself going while slowly getting involved in the creative process of composing and writing songs.
Though he had no official platform or guide to start with, he found that he possessed a knack for writing lyrics. With regular practice and persistence, he started writing his own songs. As time passed, his confidence level in himself increased. His hard work paid off when two of his songs achieved third position in competing music platforms, and were subsequently released under popular music labels such as Venus and Ultra.
This acclaim opened a new page in his musical career, giving him the confidence and credibility to keep making music as a career.
Mentorship and Recognition
[edit]In April 2019, Singh experienced a breakthrough moment when he met Padma Shri Anup Jalota, a celebrated Bhajan singer often referred to as "Bhajan Samrat." Jalota was impressed by Singh’s songwriting and musical talent, and he encouraged and supported him. This support boosted Singh’s confidence and helped him grow in the music industry.
Singh sees this guidance as a turning point in his life. It gave him not just creative encouragement, but also the emotional strength to keep going. With more songs and a clear goal, Singh continues to write, compose, and perform—driven by a desire to inspire others through his music and spiritual beliefs.
