Shankar Rajaraman is a Sanskrit Poet, psychiatrist, Sanskrit scholar, and an Astāvadhāni[1] (a practitioner of a complex literary performance)[2]. He is noted for his contributions to Sanskrit literature, particularly in the complex field of Citrakāvya (constrained "wonder poetry"), and for his interdisciplinary research bridging modern psychology with classical Indian poetics[3].
He is currently the Director at the Centre for Ancient History and Culture (CAHC)[4] at JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) in Bangalore. For the year 2016, he was awarded the Maharshi Badarayan Vyas Samman by the President of India for his outstanding contributions to the Sanskrit language.
Education
[edit]Dr. Rajaraman holds advanced degrees in both medicine and classical humanities. He completed his MBBS from M.S. Ramaiah Medical College and a Diploma in Psychological Medicine (DPM) from J.J.M. Medical College, Davanagere[5].
He subsequently pursued a MA in Sanskrit from Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), where he secured a gold medal. He also holds a MSc in Psychology[6].
He earned his PhD from the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bangalore[7]. His doctoral research focused on an interdisciplinary study of contemporary psychology and Sanskrit poetics. He later served as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at NIAS, working on Kashmir Saivism[8].
Career

[edit]Dr. Rajaraman is the Director at the Centre for Ancient History and Culture at JAIN (Deemed-to-be University), where his research spans Sanskrit poetics and Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS).
A practitioner of the literary art of Avadhana, he is also a Sanskrit poet and an expert in Citrakāvya. He is the author of Chitranaisadham, described as the first full-length Sanskrit poem composed entirely in the gomūtrikā (boustrophedon) pattern.
He wrote the Sanskrit lyrics for Punyakoti, noted as India's first Sanskrit animation movie, which featured music by Ilaiyaraaja.[9][10]
Psychiatry and Research
[edit]As a qualified physician and psychiatrist, Dr. Rajaraman has previously worked as a Research Associate at NIMHANS, Bangalore. He also worked at the Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions (FRLHT), where he translated classical Ayurvedic texts on dietetics, including Kshemakutūhalam and Bhojanakutūhalam, from Sanskrit into English.
