Shadows of Tehran is a novel based on true events, inspired by the life of Nick Berg, a former Iranian dissident who later served in the United States Special Operations. The story follows Ricardo, a fictional protagonist based on Berg’s experiences during the Iranian Revolution and his journey to becoming a special operations operative in the U.S. military.
Background
[edit]Set during the 1980s in Iran, the book presents a backdrop of political upheaval and conflict. Ricardo, born to an Iranian mother and an American father with ties to U.S. intelligence, is drawn into resistance activities after becoming a target of the Revolutionary Guard. The narrative explores themes of identity, resistance, and survival during a volatile period in Iranian history.
Plot
[edit]The protagonist, Ricardo, becomes involved in underground resistance efforts against the post-revolutionary regime. As the risk to his life increases, he manages to escape to the United States. There, he enlists in the military and joins a Special Operations unit. The story tracks his transformation from a fugitive to a highly trained soldier, reflecting both internal and external battles.
Themes
[edit]Shadows of Tehran explores psychological and moral dimensions of warfare, exile, loyalty, and personal resilience. Though fictionalized, the story draws from real experiences of political persecution and military service.
Reception
[edit]The novel has received attention from independent media outlets and reviewers. It was featured by UK Talk Radio, which described the book as relevant and thought-provoking.[1] Kirkus Reviews called the novel "a very impressive debut novel" in its editorial review.[2] On Goodreads, the book has been positively received by early readers.[3]
Author
[edit]Nick Berg is a U.S. military veteran and a former Special Operations operator. While Shadows of Tehran is a work of fiction, it draws heavily on his personal experiences growing up in revolutionary Iran and serving in the military.
