MacFarlane at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con

During his long career, Seth MacFarlane has worked on projects which never progressed beyond the pre-production stage under his direction.

2000s

[edit]

Party Animals

[edit]

In June 2003, Seth MacFarlane was attached to write and direct the film produced by the Farrelly brothers based on the 2000 novel, Frisco Pigeon Mambo by author C.D. Payne.[1]

Untitled Family Guy film

[edit]

On July 22, 2007, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, MacFarlane announced that he may start working on a feature film, although "nothing's official."[2] In TV Week on July 18, 2008, MacFarlane confirmed plans to produce a theatrically released Family Guy feature film sometime "within the next year."[3] He came up with an idea for the story, "something that you could not do on the show, which [to him] is the only reason to do a movie." He later went to say he imagines the film to be "an old-style musical with dialogue" similar to The Sound of Music, saying that he would "really be trying to capture, musically, that feel."[4] On October 13, 2011, MacFarlane confirmed that a deal for a Family Guy film had been made, and that it would be written by himself and series co-producer Ricky Blitt.[5] On November 30, 2012, MacFarlane confirmed plans to produce a Family Guy film.[6] The project was put on hold while MacFarlane worked on Ted 2.[7] On August 10, 2018, Fox announced that a live-action/animated film based on the series is in development.[8] In July 2019, MacFarlane confirmed that there will be a Family Guy feature film adaptation.[9] As of April 2024, Seth MacFarlane shared his plans to do a movie at PaleyFest but hasn't gotten the time to do it.[10]

2010s

[edit]

The Flintstones reboot

[edit]

In May 2011, Seth MacFarlane was hired by Warner Bros. Animation to make an adult animated reboot of The Flintstones. The series was projected to premiere on Fox in fall 2013.[11] MacFarlane was slated to voice Barney Rubble and other roles, while Jeff Bergman and Tress MacNeille were set to reprise their voice roles as Fred Flintstone and Wilma Flintstone and Patti LuPone was in the talks to voice Pearl Slaghoople. However, the project was placed on hold due to MacFarlane being busy directing A Million Ways to Die in the West and arguments between him and the studio.[12] On March 12, 2021, storyboards of what the show would be like were revealed on the show's storyboard artist Andy Clark's website.[13]

Untitled Borstein/Janetti animated project

[edit]

In late 2011, it was confirmed that MacFarlane is working on another animated series with Alex Borstein and Gary Janetti. Not much was known about the series other than it will be about a family and will have a female lead role. Janetti stated that the series has not yet been greenlit by Fox,[14][15] however nothing came of it since.

Untitled Broadway musical

[edit]

MacFarlane told The Hollywood Reporter, "If I did a Broadway musical, I'd probably want to do something a little bit more old-fashioned", and went on saying "I wouldn't necessarily do something that was as edgy as what [Matt Stone and Trey Parker] they have done. The challenge to me would be more along the lines of, gosh, can somebody write Oklahoma! for 2011?"[16] He has also said that, "The good thing about Broadway is that you don't have to worry about an airdate. It gets done when it gets done."[17]

Untitled American Dad! film

[edit]

During Comic-Con 2013 held in July, American Dad! co-creator Mike Barker revealed its film project which would take place on Roger's planet and may take place in the future. Barker did not announce any specifics as it relates to the nature and type of film he and the rest of the show's creators had in mind for the series, but he strongly suggested that a film is where the show's staff and creators would like to take things.[18] At Comic-Con 2022, co-creator Matt Weitzman revealed that plans for a feature film were scrapped.[19]
