School of Interdisciplinary Engineering & Sciences

[edit]

Established in February 2022, SINES is structured around three core components: Academics, Interdisciplinary Research, and Industry Partnerships, to promote and cultivate interdisciplinary education & research and respond to the contemporary challenges that require cross-cutting knowledge & expertise from multiple domains. SINES houses 32 research labs affiliated with 10 different schols of NUST, all within a single building. Additionally, 10 R&D industries are integrated into this environment, offering researchers valuable opportunities to collaborate across disciplines and apply interdisciplinary insights directly to their fields.

The school offers programs in following interdisciplinary fields under two departments,Department of Sciences and Department of Engineering.

  • Bioinfomratics
  • Climate Change and Sustainable Development
  • Systems Engineering
  • Computational Sciences and Engineering

History

[edit]

Established in 2007 as Research Center for Modelling & Simulation(RCMS), this institute has been a remarkable research center in academia. Starting from 2008, the MS and PhD for Computational Sciences and Engineering was introduced for the first time in Pakistan.

history

In 2012, the High-Performance Computing (HPC) Facility was established in RCMS, which was, at that time, one of the top 500 supercomputing facilities worldwide. In 2026 Master of sciences for Bioinformatics was introduced. Finally, in 2022, the Research Center for Modelling & Simulation was given the name School of Interdisciplinary Engineering and Sciences.

Academics

[edit]

The school offers programs in following interdisciplinary fields under two departments, Department of Sciences and Department of Engineering.

Bioinformatics

[edit]

Bioinformatics is revolutionizing science by combining genetic data with artificial Intelligence. This cutting-edge field is a key player in the Forth Industrial Resolution, where technology and biology work together to solve real-world problems. From medicine to agriculture and event waste management, bioinformatics is shaping the future.

Climate Change & Sustainable Development

[edit]

The Climate Change & Sustainable Development (CCSD) program addresses critical global challenges, focusing on the intricate interplay between human activities and natural systems. Launched in Fall 2023 by five NUST institutes, SINES, USPCAS&E, SCEE, ASAB, and S3H, the program aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to combat biodiversity loss, energy crises, and water scarcity. By promoting innovation and collaboration, the program equips graduates to drive transformational change and shape a sustainable future.

Systems Engineering

[edit]

The MS Systems Engineering program at SINES, launched in 2013, is Pakistan’s pioneering Interdisciplinary degree focused on the design integration and management of complex systems throughout their life cycle. The program equips students with the knowledge to address customer needs, expectations, and constraints, supporting local projects with advanced systems engineering practices. The program offers a comprehensive approach, blending system design principals, project management, operations research, and system validation to develop graduates with strong technical, strategical and leadership skills.

Computational Sciences and Engineering

[edit]

The Computational Sciences and Engineering program is a flagship offering of the department of engineering, providing advanced MS and PhD education tailored to industry and research needs. Aligned with the recommendations of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), the program equips students with cutting-edge skills in computational techniques, numerical simulations, machine learning, and data analytics. This ensures graduates are prepared to address real-world challenges across diverse engineering domains, contributing to groundbreaking advancements in fields such as aerospace, automotive, energy and technology.
