S. Rajarathinam is a former Indian kabaddi player and coach. He captained[1] India national kabaddi team during the 1990 Asian Games and 1994 Asian Games, where India won the gold medal. [2] In 2025, the Tamil film Bison Kaalamaadan paid tribute to his legacy and the spirit of kabaddi.

Early life

Rajarathinam was born in Ganapathipuram, Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu in 1960. He is the son of S. Subbiah Nadar. His interest in kabaddi began during school and college competitions, eventually leading to district and state-level representation.In a 2025 interview, Rajarathinam reflected on his early passion for the sport, stating that "playing on clay is the charm in kabaddi."[3]

Domestic career

Rajarathinam was active in professional kabaddi from 1980 to 1994. He captained the Tamil Nadu team from 1980 to 1984 and the Indian Railways team from 1984 to 1993[4]. He participated in major national tournaments including:

  • All India Inter-Railways Kabaddi Tournament
  • All India Civil Services Kabaddi Tournament
  • All India Federation Cup
  • National Kabaddi Championship
  • South Zone, State, District, School, and College Level Championships

Rajarathinam represented India in several international kabaddi tournaments:

Coaching and mentorship

Since 2007, Rajarathinam has been actively involved in training youth kabaddi players, helping them qualify for national-level tournaments. He also served on the Selection Committee of the Tamil Nadu Kabaddi Federation for two years.[5]

Arjuna Award

He is the first kabaddi player to receive this honour. The 1994 Arjuna Award ceremony was held on 29 August 1995 at Rashtrapati Bhawan, where Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, the 9th President of India (1992–1997), felicitated eight distinguished sportspersons for their achievements, including S. Rajarathinam for his contributions to kabaddi.[6] [7]

Legacy

Rajarathinam is celebrated for his contributions to Indian kabaddi, both as a player and mentor. His leadership and commitment to the sport have inspired generations of athletes, especially in Tamil Nadu and the Indian Railways sports community.

Rajarathinam's legacy was highlighted in the 2025 Tamil film Bison Kaalamaadan, directed by Mari Selvaraj. The movie draws inspiration from real-life kabaddi legends, portraying Rajarathinam as a key figure who shaped the sport’s history.[9]
