Pyae Phyo Thant Nyo (ပြည့်ဖြိုးသန့်ညို; born April 9, 1998) is a Burmese contemporary artist working across various medium such as sculpture, installation, photography, painting, and digital media. He explores memory, animism, technology, and cultural transformation, often through immersive and materially hybrid installations. [1]

Early life and education

[edit]

Pyae Phyo Thant Nyo was born in Myitkyina, Myanmar in 1998. He started his artistic practice through photography but upon graduating from Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, in 2021 with a BA Fine Art Photography, he expanded his practice into sculpture and installation-based work. [2]

Artistic practice

[edit]

Pyae’s multidisciplinary practice incorporates organic and industrial materials, including metal, rubber, and found objects, alongside digital processes. His works frequently engage with themes of memory, spiritual belief systems, and the relationship between human and non-human entities. [1]

In an interview published by Aura Asia Art Project, Pyae described his approach as focusing on abstraction and bodily experience, emphasizing process over medium and addressing contemporary social and political conditions. [1]

Career

[edit]

Pyae Phyo Thant Nyo has exhibited his work in Southeast Asia, Japan, and Europe.

In 2023, he presented a new body of work in Myanmar, which was covered by *STIRworld*. The exhibition was described as exploring animistic imagery and material experimentation within a contemporary Burmese context. [3]

He then participated in the 8th Yokohama Triennale in Japan, presenting the installation A Story of Our Lives. [4] [5]

Themes

[edit]

Recurring themes in Pyae’s work include memory, animism, technological mediation, and post-human identity. His practice has been associated with broader discussions around cyber-futuristic and speculative approaches within contemporary art discourse.[6]
