Draft:Protocol (jazz fusion band)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Protocol is a series of jazz fusion projects led by British drummer Simon Phillips. While the first album in the series was entirely performed by Phillips himself, Protocol albums usually feature bassist Ernest Tibbs, with the rest of the lineup depending on each album. Well known musicians in the genre such as Greg Howe and Otmaro Ruíz have been part of the band.

History

[edit]

Early projects (1989-1993)

[edit]

The Protocol name was first used on Simon Phillips' album of the same name, released in 1989. This release was recorded entirely by Phillips and was his solo debut. Before becoming a solo artist, he had participated in recording sessions with well known artists, including Judas Priest's Sin After Sin and Jeff Beck's There & Back. In the liner notes for Protocol, he described the album as "a record of experimental observations".

In 1993, a live album recorded at the Freiburg Zelt-Musik-Festival, called Force Majeure, was credited to Protocol. These live performances featured Phillips in collaboration with bassist Anthony Jackson, guitarist Ray Russell and saxophone player Tony Roberts. Russell and Jackson had previously collaborated with Phillips on an educational VHS the year prior, which featured many of the same tracks on Force Majeure.

First stable lineup (2013-2015)

[edit]

In 2013, Phillips assembled a new band consisting of Ernest Tibbs (bass), Andy Timmons (guitar) and Steve Weingart (keyboards) to record a new album called Protocol II. Even though Simon Phillips had been recording solo projects in the late 90s, this was the first time the Protocol name had been used since Force Majeure. A second album with this lineup, Protocol III, was recorded in 2015.

Protocol 4 and Protocol V (2017-present)

[edit]

Protocol 4, recorded in 2017, replaced Timmons and Weintgart with Greg Howe and Dennis Hamm respectively. Live sessions of several tracks from the album were released by the Little Big Beat Studios YouTube channel, the most successful of which has gathered more than 1 million views as of 2024. In 2018, Glenn Astarita wrote a review of the album for All About Jazz, which describes the album as "the band's finest outing to date"[1]. Andy Robson of British jazz magazine Jazzwise reviewed the album positively, praising Howe's guitar work and comparing Hamm's use of synthesizers to that of Jan Hammer[2].

In 2022, after a long hiatus from the band, Phillips released Protocol V, featuring Alex Sill on guitar, Jacob Scesney on saxophone and Otmaro Ruiz on keyboards. Shortly after its release, DownBeat's Carlo Wolff reviewed the album and gave it a rating of three stars out of five, highlighting its balance of virtuosity and accessibility[3].
