Prodígio (born Osvaldo Moniz, 1988) is an Angolan-Portuguese rapper and songwriter. He became known for his work in Lusophone hip hop, releasing solo projects including O Alquimista (2011), Prodígios (2015), Lua (2018), Castelos (2019) and KING2DA (2023).[1][2]
Early life
[edit]Prodígio was born in Angola and moved to Portugal at a young age for health reasons.[2] He began writing lyrics at twelve and became active in hip hop during the early 2000s.[1] According to BANTUMEN, he left Luanda for Lisbon around the age of ten.[3]
Career
[edit]Prodígio released his first mixtape, O Alquimista, in 2011.[2] His debut album, Prodígios (2015), received two awards at the Angola Hip Hop Awards: Best Album of the Year and Rapper MVP.[4]
Subsequent projects include Lua (2018),[5] Castelos (2019),[6] A Bênção e a Maldição (2020, with Paulo Flores), and KING2DA (2023).[7]
The collaborative album with Paulo Flores was described by the artists as “a work of instinct, of pain, almost like a catharsis.”[8] RTP noted that the project united two generations of Angolan-born musicians.[9] The first single, “Nzambi”, was released through Sony Music Portugal.[10]
In 2021, Prodígio participated in the African Rappers Cypher segment of the BET Hip Hop Awards.[11] He was nominated for the “Best African Rapper” award at AFRIMMA 2016.[12]
Artistry
[edit]Prodígio’s lyrics incorporate elements of Portuguese and Angolan Portuguese hip hop. His work frequently addresses migration, identity and resilience.[5]

Prodígio took part in the BET Hip Hop Awards 2021 Cypher representing Lusophone hip hop.[11] ComUM described Castelos as “one of the most cohesive works of his career.”[6]
