Polyarylate is a type of polyester containing aryl groups in the polymer backbone.[1] Polyarylates are considered a type of engineering plastic.[2]
Commercial polyarylates include U-polymer and ARDEL.[3][4]
Properties
[edit]Polyarylates are noted for their thermal, chemical, and mechanical strength. They are transparent on the visible spectrum. [5]
Polyarylates resistant to ultraviolet degradation. Some also show moderate resistance to gamma radiation.[6]
Synthesis
[edit]Synthesis of polyarylates is analogous to production of other polyesters, occurring via polycondensation of an aromatic diol and an aromatic diacid or diacyl chloride.[7]
Researchers have demonstrated the possibility of upcycling polyarylate from waste polyethylene terephthalate and bisphenol A-based polycarbonate.[8]
