Park Systems Corp. (Korean: 파크시스템스 주식회사) is South Korean manufacturer of scientific instruments. It is best known for its atomic force microscopes (AFM). The company is headquartered in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, and has branch offices in the U.S., Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Germany, and Switzerland.[1]

Park Systems was first established with the name PSIA (Korean: 피에스아이에이) on April 7, 1997.[2] The company changed its name to Park Systems in 2007.[3]

Pre-foundation

Dr. Sang il Park, the founder of Park Systems, was a doctoral student of Professor Calvin Quate at Stanford University. In 1986, while Park was working in Quate’s lab, Quate, Gerd Binnig, and Christoph Gerber achieved the first experimental implementation of atomic force microscopy.[4] After graduating from Stanford, Dr. Park founded Park Scientific Instruments (PSI) in 1988, a Silicon Valley manufacturer of atomic force microscopes.[5] Dr. Park returned to South Korea after exiting PSI in 1997.[6][7]

Company formation and early days

On April 7, 1997,[8] PSIA was founded by Sang-il Park.[7] The “A” at the end of the company's name, PSIA, stood for “Advanced,” meaning the company aimed to develop more advanced technology than PSI.[9] At its beginning, PSIA relied on selling imported PSI’s products, but soon started developing and manufacturing industrial-use atomic force microscopes.[10] In 2002, PSIA released XE-100, the first research AFM in Korea.[11] PSIA moved its headquarters to Korea Advanced Nano Fab Center (KANC; Korean: 한국나노기술원) in 2006.[7]

After changing name to Park Systems

On April 6, 2007, PSIA changed its name to Pak Systems, following its tenth anniversary.[3] Park Systems and IMEC signed on a joint development project (JDP) on March 23, 2015 to develop industrial AFM technology for semiconductor manufacturing.[12] On December 17, 2015, Park Systems went public on the KOSDAQ stock exchange with the ticker symbol 140860.[13] The company signed on a second JDP with IMEC on February 17, 2020.[14]

On September 6, 2022, Park Systems announced that it acquired Accurion GmbH, a German manufacturer of imaging spectroscopic ellipsometers and active vibration isolation tables.[15] At the start of 2025, Park Systems acquired Lyncée Tec, a Swiss digital holographic microscope manufacturer.[16]
