History

[edit]

Orbbec was founded in January 2013 in Shenzhen, China[5], establishing its own manufacturing operations from the outset. The company grew into a vertically integrated developer of 3D vision hardware and software, supplying components and development platforms for robotics and smart devices. The company established a U.S. subsidiary in Troy, Michigan in 2014. In 2015, the company developed the MX400 depth engine chip and became the first enterprise in China to mass-produce consumer-grade 3D sensing cameras[6]

A major milestone came in 2022 when Orbbec listed on the STAR Market of the Shanghai Stock Exchange[7], earning the distinction of being recognized as “China's first stock in 3D vision”[8].[9] In 2023, the company jointly introduced the Femto Mega 3D camera with Microsoft and NVIDIA[10], alongside the release of Gemini 2, an integration-ready stereo-depth camera.[11]

In 2024, Orbbec expanded its global presence through strategic partnerships and team expansion. The company also recruited industry veterans from Intel to strengthen its leadership team and to accelerate global expansion.[12] Orbbec commenced construction of its Intelligent Manufacturing Base in Shunde, Foshan[13], which became a hub for large-scale production. The same year saw the debut of the Gemini 330 series stereo vision camera.[14]

In 2025, the companylaunched the Gemini 435Le camera.[15] From 2022 to mid-2025, Orbbec invested nearly CNY 1 billion in research and development and held 1,112 patents related to 3D vision technology as of June 2025.[16]

For the first nine months of 2025, the company's revenue reached CNY 714 million, a 103.5% increase year-over-year, while net profit rose to CNY 108.02 million, marking an operational inflection point and reversing several consecutive years of losses.[17]

Products

[edit]

Orbbec is specialized in design and manufacture of 3D sensing products based on structured light, stereo camera, LiDAR, and iToF/dToF technologies.

  • Astra series — Structured light depth cameras for applications including body scanning, quality control, and gesture recognition. The Astra 2, released in 2023, features Orbbec's MX6600 ASIC for depth processing, offering 1600×1200 resolution at 30fps with multi-camera synchronization and IMU support.
  • Femto series — Time-of-flight cameras based on Microsoft's iToF technology. Following Microsoft's discontinuation of the Azure Kinect Developer Kit in 2023, Orbbec developed the Femto series using the same depth sensor module[18][19]. Femto Bolt: Uses the same 1-megapixel ToF sensor as Azure Kinect DK, with SDK wrapper for Azure Kinect compatibility. Femto Mega: Includes an integrated NVIDIA Jetson Nano module and Power over Ethernet connectivity.
  • Gemini 330 series (Gemini 335, Gemini 335L, Gemini 335Lg, Gemini 335Le, Gemini 336, Gemini 336L) — stereo depth + RGB cameras aimed at AMRs, robotic arms, and outdoor/indoor perception; modular with industrial connectors such as GMSL/FAKRA for long or motion-tolerant cabling.
  • Gemini 435Le — an industrial-grade stereo vision camera optimized for outdoor and industrial logistics scenario. It offers multiple preset depth modes and supports easy switching through software configuration to ensure complete and stable depth data for autonomous mobile robots (AMRs).[20]
  • Pulsar ME450 — dToF multi-pattern 3D LiDAR, introduced in 2025 as the industry's first multi-pattern LiDAR combining high-precision MEMS pitch scanning with motorized azimuth control to enable multiple configurable scanning patterns and up to ~45 m detection range; targeted at robotics and industrial automation.[21] [22]
  • Camera computers & development boards — integrated camera + compute offerings and SDKs intended to accelerate system integration for robotics and AI vision developers.

Manufacturing and Services

[edit]

Orbbec operates a manufacturing facility exceeding 102,000 square meters in Shunde, Foshan, providing OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) services for robots and ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) services for custom 3D vision systems and camera modules.[23]

In July 2024, Orbbec began providing OEM services for robots. As of December 2025, Orbbec's OEM services covered rehabilitation robots, autonomous lawn mowers, humanoid platforms, warehouse AMRs, and cleaning robots.

Orbbec SDK

[edit]

Orbbec SDK is a cross-platform software development kit designed for Orbbec's 3D cameras and LiDARs, supporting Windows, Linux (including ARM32/ARM64), and macOS platforms. The SDK provides comprehensive functionality for device parameter configuration, data stream reading, and stream processing across Orbbec's product lines including structured light, stereo vision, and time-of-flight cameras. As of October 2024, the Open Source Orbbec SDK was released to provide increased flexibility and broader device support.[24]

Market position

[edit]

Orbbec serves over 3,000 clients globally[25], including hundreds of robotics companies[26]. According to a 2024 report by GGII (Gaogong Industry Research Institute), Orbbec held over 70% market share in 3D vision sensors for service robots in China.[27] In South Korea's mobile robot market, Interact Analysis reported the company held 72% market share in 2024.[28]

Partnerships

[edit]

Orbbec maintains technology partnerships with several companies:

NVIDIA: The company's Gemini 330 series are integrated with NVIDIA Isaac robotics platform, including Isaac Sim simulation software and Isaac Perceptor for autonomous mobile robots.[29] Products are compatible with NVIDIA Jetson embedded computing modules, including Jetson Thor announced in 2025.

Microsoft: Since 2021, Orbbec has licensed Microsoft's iToF depth technology.[30] Microsoft endorsed the Femto series as a continuation of the Azure Kinect product line after discontinuing production.[31]

Advantech: Orbbec collaborates with Advantech to provide integrated edge AI computing and 3D vision solutions and co-developed MIPI-C standardization.[32][33]

Universal Robots: In October 2024, Universal Robots included the Orbbec Gemini 335Lg camera in its AI Accelerator development toolkit for collaborative robots.[34]

Orbbec reaches global markets through distributors such as DigiKey and Computech International (CTI)[35], while it maintains technical partnerships with platform providers including AMD and OpenCV.
