Open Integration Engine (OIE) is an open-source healthcare integration engine designed for health information exchange and interoperability. It is a fork of Mirth Connect that maintains a vendor-neutral, community-driven development model.[1]

History

[edit]

Open Integration Engine was created as a fork of Mirth Connect in 2025, following NextGen Healthcare's announcement that Mirth Connect would transition from a dual open-source and commercial licensing model to a single commercial licensing model.[2][3] The project was initiated to preserve open-source healthcare integration capabilities and ensure continued community access to the technology.[4]

The project's governance is structured to be transparent and community-driven, with stated goals of pursuing non-profit status and potential alignment with the Linux Foundation.[4]

In April 2025, Zen Healthcare IT became one of the first commercial entities to join the Open Integration Engine Project, committing to support the community-driven initiative.[5]

Features

[edit]

Open Integration Engine provides healthcare data integration capabilities including:[6]

  • Support for healthcare data standards including HL7, FHIR, and DICOM
  • Data transformation and mapping between formats (HL7, JSON, XML)
  • Message routing and filtering
  • Custom scripting capabilities using JavaScript
  • Protocol support including HTTP, FTP, and database connections
  • Real-time monitoring and alerting

Architecture

[edit]

The software features a modular architecture that allows for customization and extension to meet specific organizational needs.[7] It includes a Java-based administrator interface for designing and managing integration channels.

Licensing

[edit]

Open Integration Engine is released under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 (MPL 2.0), which allows free use, modification, and distribution of the software.[8]

Reception

[edit]

Following the transition of Mirth Connect to a commercial-only model, Open Integration Engine has been identified as a migration option for organizations seeking to maintain open-source integration capabilities.[9]
