ORIS Materials Intelligence is a climate technology company that develops carbon accounting and materials optimisation software for linear transportation infrastructure (roads and railways). The company conducts applied research in infrastructure sustainability and has published peer-reviewed papers on life-cycle assessment methodology and digital transformation in civil engineering.[1]

History

[edit]

Foundation and Incubation (2015–2021)

[edit]

ORIS was created in 2015 as an intrapreneurial initiative within the Holcim Innovation Center in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier.[2]

ORIS was registered as a commercial company in 2021, operating initially as a corporate spin-off.

Independence and Series A Funding (2025)

[edit]

In September 2025, ORIS completed a corporate carve-out from Holcim, securing € 3 million in Series A funding led by Liberset, a European investment company focused on sustainable industrialisation.[3] The funding round established ORIS as an independent entity with governance led by its co-founders and management team.[4]

Technology

[edit]

ORIS main product is a cloud-based software as a service (SaaS) platform that measures and optimises carbon emissions and material usage in linear transportation infrastructure projects. The platform combines artificial intelligence, data science, and engineering expertise to enable early-stage environmental assessment and optimisation.[5][6]

Partnerships

[edit]

ORIS collaborates with major international engineering firms and software providers, including Ramboll, Autodesk, Sweco, and AECOM, as well as public authorities and development organisations like Die Autobahn or the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). [5][7][8][9][10][11]

Research

[edit]

ORIS conducts and publishes scientific research on infrastructure sustainability, life-cycle assessment methodologies, and digital transformation in civil engineering. The company's research team, led by co-founder Renaud de Montaignac, has published papers at major international conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.[12][13][14]

Impact

[edit]

In 2024, ORIS reported that its platform identified optimisation opportunities across 19,199 kilometers of road infrastructure projects, enabling clients to potentially:

  • Avoid 3.2 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions
  • Reduce usage of 4.4 million tonnes of primary materials
  • Save $24 million in project costs

The platform served approximately 1,400 users across engineering firms, infrastructure owners, and public authorities.[18]

Leadership

[edit]

Nicolas Miravalls

[edit]

Co-founder and CEO. Miravalls has over 20 years of experience in infrastructure construction, having worked in contracting, consulting, and construction materials before founding ORIS. He led the transition of ORIS from intrapreneurial initiative to independent company.

Renaud de Montaignac

[edit]

Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer. De Montaignac holds a PhD in structural engineering and has over 20 years of experience in design, project management, and operations for large infrastructure projects. He has contributed to multiple scientific publications on infrastructure sustainability and life cycle assessment.
