OBEPINE+
[edit]OBEPINE+ is a French research and development initiative focused on wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE), aimed at contributing to the national system for the prevention of emerging infectious diseases and high-risk pathogens. The project involves the analysis of wastewater to detect and monitor epidemics, including the circulation of viruses and other pathogens.
OBEPINE+ is funded by the french governement under the grant reference ANR-24-MIEM-0004. It forms part of the French national strategy for the prevention of emerging infectious diseases and high-risk pathogens, contributing to pandemic preparedness efforts. The project aims to establish a national research and development platform dedicated to wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) in France. Its primary goal is the early detection and monitoring of epidemics through the analysis of wastewater.
OBEPINE+ brings together 18 public and private partners. The initiative operates across nine geographical sites in both mainland France and French overseas territories, including French Guiana and New Caledonia. It is supported by a network of expert laboratories and dedicated research infrastructures.
The platform is designed to support integrated R&D projects in several areas: the development of improved molecular methods for pathogen detection and quantification, genomic characterization of microorganisms found in wastewater, epidemiological modeling, and the assessment of infectious risk based on environmental data.
History
[edit]Obépine+ is a project developed by the Obépine network, a French epidemiological observatory established in 2020 as part of the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The network was created to promote the use of wastewater as a quantitative indicator of the different phases of an epidemic caused by a virus or bacterium. This approach provides a complementary method to monitor the active circulation of pathogens in the population. Wastewater-based data can be used to track temporal trends in the progression of an epidemic or pandemic, detect local outbreaks (clusters), and identify emerging variants more rapidly. Unlike clinical surveillance systems wastewater monitoring is not affected by testing rates or individual health-seeking behavior.
