Nono From Another World[1][note 1][2] (Simplified Chinese: 诺诺来自异世界[note 2]) was a Chinese side-scrolling action role-playing mobile game with gacha game mechanics developed by Yostar. It was released in China on March 30, 2016, and in Japan on July 20, 2017.

The game has ended service on December 26, 2018 for both Chinese and Japanese releases.[3]

Gameplay

[edit]

Nono From Another World was a side-scrolling action role-playing game with beat 'em up elements. The player can pick two of three characters (Nono, Ruri, or Miyu) to play as per stage, as they traverse platforms, attack enemies, and avoid hazards using the on-screen control stick and buttons. The player can switch between their chosen characters, allowing them to create combos for more damage.

Beyond combat, the in-game gacha allows players to obtain various clothing, weapons, and accessories, which can be equipped to change the characters stats and appearance.[4][5] Players also can obtain ingredients from rewards to cook food and serve, not only improving stats but intimacy between other characters.[6]

Development

[edit]

Nono From Another World was the first original game developed by Yostar after the company was formally established in 2014. Before Yostar's establishment, Yostar was a smaller indie team under the name StudioGM,[note 3] which focused on developing smaller anime-styled video games ranging from visual novels to fan games.[7]

Nono From Another World was crowdfunded in 2015. The campaign was successful, achieving 347% of its funding goal with 210 backers.[8] The game was initially conceived as a stand-alone title for PC and the PlayStation as a stand-alone game.

The development direction of Nono From Another World would change into a free-to-play mobile game, creating changes in game design.[9] This platform change led to significant alterations in the game's design, including the implementation of gacha game mechanics.

The game features Japanese voice acting and Live2D animations. For the Japanese release, Japanese voice actor and singer Hitomi Harada sung 「盲目のwill」 as a promotional tie-in song.[10]

Reception and Legacy

[edit]

Nono From Another World did not perform well and struggled in the marketplace.[11] As a result, to avoid bankruptcy, in late 2016, Yostar CEO Yao Meng had no choice but to sell his house to continue to fund for Yostar.[12] The funding would be used to publish Manjuu and Yongshi's Azur Lane in Japan and help establish video game company Hypergryph. Learning from previous experience and failures, this allowed commercial success for Yostar published titles.[7]

The service for Nono From Another World would later be terminated on December 26, 2018 for both Chinese and Japanese releases.[3]

Though Yostar is not notable for its past game development history, but rather for publishing other companies' titles such as Manjuu and Yongshi's Azur Lane, the company has stated its intention to continue developing original games.[13][14][15]
