No. 1 Recruit Training Unit (1RTU) is the unit responsible for preparing recruits, newly enlisted Air Force men and women, for military service in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Over two-thirds of the Air Force's members have completed their initial military training (IMT) through the unit, which is based at RAAF Base Wagga. 1RTU is part of Ground Academy, Air Force Training Group.[1] The unit is currently commanded by Wing Commander Jodie Mason.[2]

History

[edit]

No. 1 Recruit Training Unit was established at RAAF Base Richmond, New South Wales, on 2 August 1954. In 1958 the unit was been relocated to RAAF Base Rathmines. In 1960, 1RTU was relocated to RAAF Base Wagga for four years, followed by a relocation to RAAF Base Edinburgh. In 1970, 1965, the Women's Royal Australian Air Force (WRAAF) Recruit Training Unit was incorporated into 1RTU. In 2008, the unit was relocated back to RAAF Base Wagga.[3]

Structure

[edit]

1RTU is organised into several recruit training squadrons that are commanded by a Squadron Leader who is appointed as Chief Instructor of the squadron. These squadrons are further divided into two flights made up of 30 recruits; these flights are commanded by a Flight Lieutenant, and assisted by an adjutant ranked Flight Sergeant. Flights are sub-divided into sections—or recruit courses, which the fundemental element used for a recruit's training. Recruit courses are commanded by Sergeants.[4] Unlike the 1st Recruit Training Battalion (1RTB), the Chief Instructor acts as the Executive Officer rather than the Commanding Officer.[5]
