Neta Weiner (Hebrew: נטע וינר; born January 1, 1987) is a musician, playwright, actor, director and social activist; originally from Jaffa, Israel and currently based in Boston, USA. He won the Shechter-Rabinovich Award for Original Israeli Creation (2020)[1], the Israel Festival Award(2016) and the Golden Hedgehog Fringe Awards (2012, 2019, 2022)[2][3].
Weiner is the lead singer and co-founder of System Ali, a multilingual Jewish-Palestinain hip-hop collective, and the artistic director of Beit System Ali[4], a cultural-educational movement promoting social change through artistic collaboration. His artistic work merges spoken word, physical theater, music and martial arts[5]. His stage works are often performed in Hebrew, Arabic, Yiddish and English,[6] and have been showcased in theaters and festivals worldwide[7].
Since 2024, Weiner has been a lecturer in the Theatre, Dance, and Performance Department at Tufts University[8] and a visiting scholar at the Schusterman Center at Brandeis University.[9][10]
Early Life
[edit]Weiner was born in Givat Haim and grew up in Zichron Yaakov, Israel. At age 15, he attended IASA – the Israeli Academy of Science and Arts and later completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) at Mahindra United World College in India. In 2014, he graduated from Muzik – School of Music Creation and Production in Tel Aviv, specializing in sound engineering and composition.
Since the age of 11, Weiner has trained in martial arts, including Wing Tsun Kung Fu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Krav Maga, which he integrates into his performances.
Career
[edit]Theatrical Career
In 2010 Weiner co-wrote, composed and acted on a balcony performance in Bat Yam Street Festival, inspired by Lea Goldberg’s ‘Apartment for Rent’. The Show Won the Best Show prize at Bat Yam Street Festival[11].
In 2012 Weiner co-wrote and acted in ‘This is the Land’, a satirical response to the Zionist creation myth. He won the Golden Hedgehog Award for Best Playwright[12].
In 2016 Weiner wrote, directed and was the lead actor at ‘Cut. Loose’ performance. The show premiered at the Acco Festival and won Best Text Award at Acco Festival[13].
In 2019 Weiner wrote, directed and was the lead actor at ‘Mejinik’, an intense family drama, blending rap, movement, and spoken word. He won Best Show & Best Director at the Golden Hedgehog Fringe Awards.
In 2020 Weiner won the Shechter-Rabinovich Award for Original Israeli Creation[14].
In 2022 Weiner co-wrote and was the lead actor at ‘Shmuel – A Hip-Hop Opera’. The show won Best Show at the Golden Hedgehog Awards. He also wrote and directed “Eifo Yafo (Where is Jaffa?)”, and the play Represented Gesher Theatre in the FACE TO FAITH International Project, and wad performed at Teatro Dei Venti in Italy[15].
In 2023 Weiner wrote and directed ‘Yama’, which premiered at the Israel Festival. The show was exhibited as a sound installation at the Salzburg Museum of Modern Art in 2024[16].
Music Career
Alongside his theatrical work, Weiner is a musician, rapper, and songwriter. He writes and sings in Hebrew, Arabic, Yiddish and English.
In 2006 Weiner Co-founded System Ali, a multilingual Jewish-Arab hip-hop band.
In 2016 Weiner Released his debut solo album "B’Zchut HaShiva" (Right of Return).
In 2023 Weiner Released his second solo album "Pinui Binui" (Eviction & Construction).
In 2024 Weiner Released the single "Ma Shlomcha Achot" (How Are You, Sister?) with Palestinian poet Samira Saraya.[17]

Educational and Social Work
[edit]Since 2014, Weiner has been the Artistic Director of Beit System Ali: interdisciplinary education programs for marginalized communities.
During 2020-2021 Weiner was a lecturer in Creative Writing and Spoken Word at Kibbutzim College.
In 2024 Weiner Led a voice, body, and text performance course at Salzburg Summer Academy.
Weiner is Currently a Lecturer in Theatre, Dance, and Performance in Tufts University and a Guest Scholar at the Schusterman Center, Brandeis University.
Personal Life
[edit]Weiner lives in Boston with his partner, choreographer and dancer Stav Marin, and their daughter.
