Neil McGuinness is a Scottish football executive, talent scout, and technical director known for his work in player recruitment and scouting across European and international football. He has held prominent roles at clubs such as Celtic FC (SPFL), the Qatar Football Association (AFC & FIFA) , Columbus Crew (MLS) and Los Angeles Football club (MLS) where he currently serves as Technical Director.

Career

Celtic F.C.

McGuinness began his professional football career at Celtic F.C. in Scotland, where he served as the senior first team scout. During his tenure, he was instrumental in identifying and recommending several key signings, including Virgil van Dijk and Stefan Johansen among others.

Qatar Football Association

Following his success in Scotland, McGuinness joined the Qatar Football Association in a senior national team recruitment position. In this role, he played a key part in preparing the national team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, working closely with the federation to enhance its scouting networks and data-driven approach.

Columbus Crew (MLS)

McGuinness was appointed as Director of Scouting and player recruitment at Columbus Crew in the United States’ Major League Soccer (MLS). He oversaw player recruitment, squad development, and long-term sporting strategy. Under his guidance, Columbus Crew emphasized data-led scouting, international recruitment, and development of young talent. During his tenure the club won the Campeones cup in 2021 and two MLS cups in 2020 and 2023. McGuinness is also credited with the recruitment of key figures such as Cucho Hernández, Lucas Zelarayan and Diego Rossi

Los Angeles Football Club (MLS)

As Technical Director, McGuinness leads LAFC’s player recruitment strategy, which includes overseeing scouting, working with the coaching team on squad planning, and transfer negotiations incoming and outgoing. His role is closely linked to Co‑President and General Manager, John Thorrington
