Draft:NYSHEX freight indices

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NYSHEX freight indices (NYFI) are a family of container shipping rate benchmarks published by the New York Shipping Exchange (NYSHEX). Announced in November 2024 and launched in 2025,[1] the indices are intended to reflect the actual moving rates of ocean freight and to support index-linked contracting.

History

[edit]

NYSHEX disclosed plans for a set of freight rate indices in November 2024 in conjunction with a Series C funding announcement that included a strategic collaboration with the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE).[1] The initiative was highlighted at the "NYSHEX Member Forum & Index Day 2025"[2] held at the New York Stock Exchange on 30 April 2025.

Methodology and governance

[edit]

NYSHEX describes the indices as transaction-based (built from actual shipment data rather than quoted offers) and "created and governed by the industry." A Federal Register notice published on 5 February 2025 summarized a filed agreement amendment stating that participating ocean carriers would join the NYSHEX index governing board to "discuss and agree on all aspects of the development, implementation, modification and auditing of [the] container freight indices."[3] Shippers and NVOCCs participate alongside carriers on the index governing board, ensuring all stakeholder groups' perspectives are represented in the ultimate index methodologies.

Coverage and Publication

[edit]

NYSHEX states that the series is global in scope across major trade lanes and that methodology details are available on its website. The company characterizes the benchmarks as "independently governed," "transparent," and "built on actual shipment data."[4][5]

Uses

[edit]

Company materials and trade-press coverage describe the indices as intended to: enable index-linked contracts between shippers, NVOCCs and carriers; improve price transparency; and facilitate risk management amid spot-rate volatility.[6]

Reception

[edit]

Commentary in the trade press situates the project within a broader shift toward floating-rate and index-linked contracting in container shipping, noting the ICE collaboration as groundwork for potential hedging tools.[6] Public remarks by FMC Commissioner Daniel Maffei at the 2025 Member Forum emphasized risk-management considerations for the sector.[7]
