'''Prof. (Dr.) Mukesh Kumar''' (born July 1966) is an Indian journalist, author, and academic known for his contributions to Hindi television journalism, digital media, and media education. He has over three decades of professional experience in print, broadcast, and digital journalism, and has held senior editorial and academic positions in India. As of 2024, he is the Editor of the Hindi digital news platform Satyahindi.com[1] and hosts its affiliated YouTube channel Deshkaal.

Early Life and Education

Mukesh Kumar was born in July 1966 in India. He holds a Ph.D. in Media Studies from Lucknow University (2013), where his research focused on TRP ratings and media market behavior. He earned a master's degree in mass communication and a bachelor's degree in science from A.P.S. University, Rewa, and a bachelor's in journalism and mass communication from Dr. Harisingh Gour University, Sagar, where he was a gold medalist.

Career

Kumar began his journalism career in the 1980s with publications such as ''Maya'', ''Adarsh Patra'', and ''Dainik Samay''. In 1989, he became the founding executive editor of ''Sentinel'', the first Hindi daily from Northeast India.[2]

Television Journalism

In the 1990s, Kumar transitioned to television journalism, working with production houses and networks including Moving Pictures Ltd., Asia Pacific Communication Associates (APCA), and The Communication Group. He anchored and produced programs on Doordarshan such as ''Parakh'', ''First Edition'', ''Filhal'', and ''Subah Savere''.

He later assumed leadership roles at various news channels:

  • Deputy Editor, S1 News (2004–2006)
  • Associate Managing Editor, Voice of India (2008)
  • Director, Maurya TV (2009–2010)

Kumar is known for launching six Hindi news channels and for anchoring ''Shatranj ke Khiladi'', a political talk show that featured interviews with major Indian politicians and public figures.[4]

Academic Roles

Kumar served as Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication at SGT University (2016–2019), where he established a media center, curated a media museum, and organized national academic events. He later joined Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication (2019–2021) as an Adjunct Professor, teaching television journalism, ethics, and digital practices. He has also served as an external examiner at the Rabindranath Tagore Institute, Mauritius.[5]

His research focuses on misinformation, media ethics, and digital literacy. He has presented at national and international conferences and collaborated with Johns Hopkins University on a health communication study.
