ModRetro is an American consumer electronics company that develops retro-style video game hardware. The company was founded in 2023 by Palmer Luckey and Torin Herndon. ModRetro is known for producing the Chromatic, a handheld system designed to play Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges.

History

[edit]

The name ModRetro originates from an online forum created by Palmer Luckey in 2009 that focused on console modification and hardware projects.[1] Luckey revived the name in 2023 as part of a consumer hardware venture developing cartridge-based gaming devices.

Products

[edit]

Chromatic

[edit]

ModRetro released the Chromatic handheld in 2024. It is compatible with Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges and uses FPGA-based hardware to run software without software emulation.[2][3] Reviews from outlets including The Verge, Wired, Vice, and Popular Mechanics noted the device’s metal construction, traditional cartridge slot, and focus on physical media.[4]

Retail releases

[edit]

In August 2024, ModRetro and GameStop released a GameStop-exclusive version of the Chromatic.[5] GameStop offered the system as a limited edition model through its online and retail stores.

Game publishing

[edit]

ModRetro also publishes new and re-issued cartridge games for the Chromatic. The company distributes titles developed by independent studios as well as licensed re-releases of older handheld games.[6]

M64

[edit]

In 2025, ModRetro announced the M64, an FPGA-based home console designed to run Nintendo 64 cartridges.[7] Early reporting describes the system as supporting original controllers and physical game media.

Reception

[edit]

Coverage from The Verge, Wired, Vice, and other outlets has highlighted ModRetro’s use of FPGA hardware and support for physical cartridges, while noting that the company’s devices target a niche retro-gaming audience.[8][9]
