Johan Collander (born in 1975), known professionally as Midsummer Ex, is a synthwave artist from Eskilstuna, Sweden, who has lived in London for 10 years and now residing in Stockholm and first released music 2022. Midsummer Ex´s music and sound is inspired by 80´s synthpop, sci-fi horror, and 80s Films & Tv soundtracks, italo disco and aims to blend electronic synthwave, retrowave, futuresynth and 80's synthpop sounds with a touch of scandinavian heartbreak and bittwersweet childhood nostalgia and has an obsession with memories, melancholy and the past.
Midsummer Ex is a singer, songwriter and producer. He has written songs for artists like Debra Gaynor from The Flirts. As a kid Johan won a school competition two years in a row at the age 6 and 7 at slagstaskolan, [1][2] and featured on the vinyl single "Rör inte min kompis" [3][4] in the year 1986. He has released music with the band International [5] and released the album INTL 2017 on the Italo Box Music label. [6] A few of the bands songs had rotation in the famous club Patrick Miller in the heart of Mexico City.
Midsummer Ex released his first studio single, Missing you, in 2022. He has released several singles and one EP since up until now, many of them with accompanying music videos. Several songs have been played on P4 Radio Sörmland Nightride.fm and The State of Synth The debut album "Fake It Till You Make It" is coming out May 16.
The song "Hollywood Star"[7] is about John Hinckley Jr Jodie Foster and Ronald Reagan. "Hollywood Star" is featuring on Conzoom records Electropop series Electropop.28 [8] other notable artists in the series are artists like Parralox, Boytronic, Eurotix, Mobile Homes, Zynic, Color Theory, Emmon Cicero "This compilation is perhaps the best of the entire series" Official release fate 06/12/2024
The songs "Always 1985" and "Missing You" feature in the retro computer game "Mega City Force"[9] along artists like Timecop1983, Droid Bishop and Nightcrawler.
In October 2024, Midsummer Ex received his first number one on the radio station Radiomaxitalo with the italo disco Dj TinTin Remix of the song "Stuck on Repeat" on the Rödtopp Records[10] label. It was still number one when the March chart was presented. [11]The track is also featuring on the ZYX Music Italo Disco New Generation Vol.26 [12]
