Micha Star Liberty is an American trial attorney, author, and advocate. She is the founder of Liberty Law in Oakland, California, and is known for representing survivors of sexual abuse, harassment, discrimination, and human trafficking, as well as for wrongful-death and personal-injury litigation.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Liberty earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Juris Doctor from the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings).[1] She was admitted to the State Bar of California in 2001 and maintains active bar status.[2]
Career

[edit]In 2005, Liberty founded Liberty Law, a plaintiffs’ firm based in Oakland, California.[3] Her practice centers on civil rights, employment discrimination and harassment, and the representation of survivors of sexual abuse and human trafficking. She also serves as a mediator and has contributed to California practice publications.[1][4]
Notable cases
[edit]Le Moullac v. Daylight Foods, Inc. (San Francisco Superior Court) — In January 2015, a jury found the truck driver negligent in the death of cyclist Amélie Le Moullac and awarded $4 million to her family; the case received extensive Bay Area coverage and was noted in legal press. [5][6][7][8]
I.V. v. Vacaville Unified School District (E.D. Cal.) — Federal civil-rights litigation concerning a student with disabilities, with related media attention to bus-abuse allegations in which Liberty represented the family.[9][10]
K.H. v. Antioch Unified School District (N.D. Cal.) — Special-education civil-rights litigation involving a student with disabilities; federal orders summarize the dispute and proceedings.[11][12][13]

[edit]Liberty has held leadership positions in professional organizations. She served as President of the Consumer Attorneys of California (CAOC) in 2020, following prior officer roles.[22] As a CAOC leader, she testified and wrote about State Bar proposals affecting civil justice.[23] She has also been active in the American Association for Justice and the National Crime Victim Bar Association.[1]
Advocacy and consulting
[edit]Liberty advocates for trauma-informed legal practice, emphasizing approaches designed to reduce re-traumatization and empower survivors.[1][24] She founded Lionhearted Leader, a consultancy providing leadership and diversity training with a trauma-informed framework, and The Soaring Center, which supports sexual assault survivors and consults with attorneys and advocates.<sup>[3]</sup>
Radiant Star Roasters
[edit]She is also CEO of Radiant Star Roasters, a coffee business that sources from women-owned farms and donates a portion of profits to women’s-empowerment initiatives.[4][25]
Recognition
[edit]Liberty has been selected to the Super Lawyers list in California multiple years.[26] In 2015 she received the Consumer Attorneys of California “Street Fighter of the Year” award, recognizing her advocacy in a child sexual-abuse case.[27][22]
