Mercer Mass Timber

[edit]

Mercer Mass Timber (MMT) is a North American manufacturer of mass timber engineered wood products, including cross-laminated timber (CLT), glue laminated timber (glulam), and structural connection systems. The company is a subsidiary of Mercer International Inc. and operates multiple production facilities across North America.[1]

History

[edit]

Mercer Mass Timber began its operations after its parent company, Mercer International acquired the former Katerra CLT facility in Spokane Valley, Washington.[2] The acquisition and repurposing of the Spokane facility was announced in 2021 and marked Mercer’s entry into large-scale CLT production in North America.[3]

In 2023, Mercer International completed the purchase of Structurlam Mass Timber Corporation, which added additional manufacturing capacity and facilities to Mercer Mass Timber’s operations in the United States and Canada.[4][5]

In 2024 and 2025 Mercer Mass Timber announced facility upgrades and broadened services, including the launch of an on-site construction and installation service line to support project delivery.[6]

Operations and facilities

[edit]

Mercer Mass Timber operates three primary production facilities:

  • Mercer Spokane (Spokane Valley, Washington, United States): The Spokane facility occupies approximately 270,000 sq ft and produces CLT panels up to 12 ft by 60 ft.[7] The site was acquired from Katerra by Mercer International as part of their investment in mass timber manufacturing. [8] [9]
  • Mercer Conway (Conway, Arkansas, United States): The Conway facility was acquired through Mercer International's transaction with Structurlam, and is a large manufacturing site producing CLT and glulam, with CNC fabrication capabilities and automated glulam processing systems. The acquisition of Structurlam's former facility increased Mercer Mass Timber's CLT and glulam capacity.[10][11][12]
  • Mercer Okanagan (Okanagan Falls, British Columbia, Canada): The Okanagan operation includes CLT finishing and glulam production plants.[13] The site produces CLT and glulam components and has manufacturing capacity described on Mercer’s operations pages. [14]

Following the acquisition of Structurlam, Mercer Mass Timber expanded overall production capacity and operational efficiencies. In select facilities, upgrades have resulted in an estimated 25% increase in glulam output. [15][16]

Products and services

[edit]

Mercer Mass Timber manufactures a range of mass timber products and delivers supporting services for design and construction:

  • Products: Cross-laminated timber (CLT) in 3-, 5-, 7- and 9-ply configurations, glulam beams and columns in multiple species and grades, and engineered timber connection systems. Product offerings include architectural appearance (AA), industrial appearance (IA) visual grades, and certification to ANSI/APA PRG 320 and related standards where applicable.[17]
  • Core services: Mercer Mass Timber provides additional supporting services, including design-assist and engineering based on DfMA principles, precision manufacturing, logistics planning, and project execution with field installation managed by its construction services division.[18]

Notable projects

[edit]

Mercer Mass Timber has been involved in large-scale projects across North America by delivering material supply and project services including:

  • Anthony Timberlands Center for Design & Materials Innovation (University of Arkansas): A mass-timber academic and research facility designed by Grafton Architects and Modus Studio that uses cross-laminated timber and glulam in its structure[19]. Mercer Mass Timber is cited as a materials supplier for the CLT and design-assist partner on the project.[20]
  • Walmart Home Office Campus (Bentonville, Arkansas): Mercer Mass Timber supplied CLT and glulam for multiple mass-timber office buildings on Walmart’s campus and provided design-assist and installation services on portions of the project[21]. The campus is one of the largest corporate mass-timber initiatives in the United States.[22]
  • Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library (Medora, North Dakota): Mercer Mass Timber supplied CLT and glulam and provided design-assist and logistics support for the library’s timber roof structure; project reporting indicates phased construction and sustainability targets for LEED/Living Building Challenge goals. Coverage of the project appears in multiple outlets.[23][24]

Reception and coverage

[edit]

Mercer Mass Timber’s entry into mass timber production and its acquisition of Structurlam assets received attention in industry and regional press, which documented the repurposing of the Katerra plant in Spokane and the expansion of manufacturing capacity in North America. Trade publications and construction news outlets have also covered Mercer’s project roles and the company’s move into installation and construction services.[25][26][27]
