Meena Hasan (born May 14, 1987) is an American visual artist and educator known for her work in painting and mixed media, which often explores themes of textile history, identity, and play theory. [1] She is currently based in Brooklyn, New York, and serves as Graduate Program Director and Associate Professor in the Painting Department at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).[2]

Early life and education

Hasan was born in New York City and is of Bangladeshi and American heritage. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College in 2009 and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the Yale School of Art in 2013. [3] [4]

Artistic practice

Hasan’s work draws from play theory and textile histories and often engages with cultural identity and pattern-making. Her influences include artists such as Ellen Gallagher, Wangechi Mutu, Marina Adams, Zarina, Sigmar Polke, Max Ernst, Wassily Kandinsky, Hokusai, Eva Hesse, Josef Albers, and Jack Whitten.[1]

Career

Hasan has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across the United States. Her solo exhibitions include shows at Main Window and Deanna Evans Projects in Brooklyn,[5]The Old Stone House in Brooklyn, [6]Stowaway Gallery in Los Angeles, [7]Hiestand Galleries at Miami University in Ohio, [8] Launch F18 in New York, [9] and Violet’s Café in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.[10] Her residencies include the TNT Residency with Tiger Strikes Asteroid and Transmitter galleries in 2025, which culminated in a New York exhibition, [11] and a fellowship at the American Academy in Rome in 2010 through the Premio Terna Prize, which included exhibitions in Rome and Shanghai.[12] In addition to her studio practice, Hasan has held academic roles at numerous institutions. She became Graduate Program Director and Associate Professor in Painting at RISD in 2025. [13] She previously taught in the Independent Study Program and Virtual Salon Critiques at NYC Crit Club [14] and served as a teaching artist with Studio in a School for the NYC Public Schools (2016–2019). [15] She has been a visiting artist or lecturer at institutions including Pratt Institute,[16] Carnegie Mellon University, [17] Sarah Lawrence College, [18],Sotheby’s Institute of Art, [16], Boston University, [19], Rutgers University, [20], and MICA. Hasan has also participated in public programs and online panels for organizations such as BRIC Brooklyn [22] and Precog Magazine. [23]

Hasan has received notable awards such as the William and Dorothy Yeck First Place Purchase Award, (2022) [8] Miami University Young Painters Competition, [8] and the Carol Schlosberg Memorial Prize for Painting from the Yale School of Art. [24].

Collaborations

Hasan has collaborated with artist Anjuli Rathod for The Faraway Nearby (2025) [25] and with Dylan Yeats on a project at The Old Stone House in Brooklyn (2025). [6]
