From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matthijs Bouw is a Dutch architect and urbanist, and founder of One Architecture and Urbanism [1] (est. 1995), an award-winning firm based in Amsterdam and New York, recognized as a global leader in designing for climate adaptation and mitigation.[2]
His practice uniquely addresses programmatic, financial, technical, and organizational challenges through design, serving as a tool for collaboration.[3] For example, his “Design Studios” have supported the Netherlands’ Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment.[4][5]

In NYC, Bouw’s office co-led the BIG Team to win the Rebuild by Design competition, focused on Flood protection for Manhattan [6][7]. They are involved in projects like Lower Manhattan Coastal Protection and the FiDi/Seaport Masterplan.[8][9] Other North American projects include climate district plans for Boston, Houston, and Vancouver. Their international work involves "building with nature" projects for clients like Asian Development Bank (ADB), World Bank, and WWF. In the Netherlands, they work on climate-resilient urban developments such as Amsterdam-Havenstad and Almere-Pampus.[10] Matthijs Bouw is a professor of practice at Penn University[11], where he positions design as an "integrator and innovator among scales, disciplines, actors and issues" focused on urban resilience, water management, and energy transition projects.[12]

Matthijs Bouw is a registered architect in The Netherlands, where he, along with his firm One Architecture, has designed projects such as Villa Bollen[14], the apartment buildings Jardin and Alta in Amsterdam[15], and the award-winning renovation of St. Jozef healthcare center in Deventer.[16][17]

In 2000 he co-curated the Dutch pavilion at the Venice Biennale and has published in numerous architectural journals, including de Architect, Archis/Volume, and MONU. A monograph of his firm's work was published by Korean DD series in 2006. Internationally, he has taught at TU Delft, Berlage Institute, TU Graz, University of Kentucky, Harvard Graduate School of Design[18][19] and Sci-Arc. In 2014, Matthew Stadler published Deventer, exploring Bouw’s unique project and process.[20] His latest book, Building with Nature, emphasizes nature-based solutions for climate adaptation.[21]
