Early life

[edit]

Shaffer was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and grew up in the nearby suburb of Bountiful.[6] At an early age, he was diagnosed with Legg–Calvé–Perthes disease.[7] He began snowboarding at age 11 at local areas such as Brighton Ski Resort.[8] Local newspapers reported on his participation in junior divisions of the Utah Winter Games.[9]

He attended Bountiful high school where he played both basketball and baseball, earning all-state honors in baseball.[10][11] He later went to college at the University of Utah and University of Wales in the U.K..[12]

Snowboarding career

[edit]

Early competition

[edit]

In 2019, footage of him was in a Snowboarder Magazine web series on the growth of Utah snowboarding during the late 1990s and early 2000s called Rewind: Salt Lake City – Episode 2, Influx & Explosion.[34]
