Hillary Marufu (born 13 December 1997), known professionally as Master H, is a Zimbabwean Zimdancehall artist and songwriter. He rose to prominence in 2021 with his hit single "Habakkuk" and is noted for his energetic performances and socially conscious lyrics.
Early life and education
[edit]Master H was born in Murehwa, Zimbabwe, and raised in the high-density suburb of Chitungwiza. He attended Zengeza 3 High School, completing his O-Level studies in 2016. His passion for music emerged during his school years, motivating him to pursue a career in the Zimdancehall genre.[1]
Career
[edit]Master H began his music journey in 2014 under the stage name Major H. He first gained attention with a viral freestyle clip titled "UKUSHAYA," which was later professionally recorded at Chillspot Records in 2016. He adopted the name Master H and gained national recognition with the song "Habakkuk" in 2021, released during the COVID-19 lockdown period.[2]
In 2023, Master H released the Afrobeat-influenced single "Mjolo," which combined Shona and Swahili lyrics and received critical and audience acclaim. He later collaborated with Voltz JT on the track "Dhanzi (Nawanadem)," which topped local music charts.[3]
In 2024, he released an extended play (EP) that included songs like "Bhoo Zvokuti," "Ghetto Tears," "Bum Bum Figa" featuring Anika, and "Dancehall Time" featuring Jamaican artist Capleton. The project was praised for addressing themes of hardship, resilience, and youth empowerment.[4]
