Manubhai Parikh was an acclaimed modern Indian artist known for his vibrant color palette, refined symbolism, and a distinctive style rooted in the traditions of Indian paintings.

His work is marked by the use of unique colors, including reds, oranges, and yellows, which exhibit light and warmth, alongside beautiful motifs of green. He also played a significant role as an art educator, earning national recognition, including the prestigious National Award to Teachers presented by President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in 2001.

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Manubhai was born into a family of artists in Gujarat’s Kheda district, and was fond of art from an early age. His siblings Jayant and Natu Parikh, are also artists, and his son, Amit Parikh, is a commercial artist running his own advertising and marketing agency, Hetarsh Creative Force in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Manubhai received a Diploma in Painting from M.S. University, Baroda, and he had been trained under celebrated artists such as Prof. N.S. Bendre and Prof. K.G. Subramanyan. His academic excellence was recognized with multiple scholarships, including:

Merit Scholarship, M.S. University (1969–70)

Shri Sayajirao Diamond Jubilee Trust Scholarships (1966–68)

National Scholarships from the Government of India (1970–72)

Artistic Style

[edit]

Manubhai Parikh's visual language is a fusion of traditional Rajput aesthetics and modern sensibilities. He predominantly works with pure, musical colors—especially vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows—representing light and emotional intensity. His landscapes often feature trees, hills, houses, forts, and tents, imbued with a dreamlike serenity.

He is known for his mastery in rendering delicate trees in varying shades of green, with intricate brushwork that gives his compositions both texture and soul. Parikh prefers letting colours "speak" rather than relying on explicit symbolism—creating what many describe as poetic, almost musical, visual experiences.

Career as an Educator

[edit]

In addition to his work as an artist, Manubhai served as a teacher and mentor in Ahmedabad, where he trained generations of students—many of whom went on to receive state, national, and international awards. His contribution to arts education was nationally acknowledged when he received:

National Award to Teachers (2001) under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, presented by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
