Manas Choudhury (born 19 August 1968) is an Indian politician from Odisha affiliated with the Indian National Congress (INC). He serves as a national secretary of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) since December 2024. He previously held positions as president of the Cuttack District Congress Committee from September 2022 to June 2024 and the Bhubaneswar District Congress Committee from July 2018 to September 2022.[1][2]

Early life

[edit]

Choudhury was born on 19 August 1968 in Cuttack, Odisha. He resides in Cuttack.[3]

Political career

[edit]

Choudhury's involvement with the INC began in 1998 as general secretary of the District Youth Congress in Bhubaneswar, advancing to vice-president from 2000 to 2003. He served as a member of CAPART (Eastern Zone) under the Ministry of Rural Development from 2004 to 2007 and as a trustee of Paradip Port Trust from 2010 to 2012[3]. In 2004 he contested the Odisha Legislative Assembly election from the Cuttack-Sadar constituency on an Indian National Congress ticket.[4] In January 2024, he became a member of the Odisha Pradesh Election Committee for the 2024 GE Election.

He was arrested in March 2023 during a Congress protest in Bhubaneswar;[5] police later registered a case against him in July 2023 for leading a demonstration inside a revenue-inspector’s office,[6] and he was again taken into custody amid a Congress “mega-protest” in Bhubaneswar in March 2025.[7] .

On 7 June 2024, Choudhury was expelled from the INC for six years due to alleged indiscipline and anti-party activities, including conspiring against party candidates in Cuttack district.[1] He denied the charges and accused OPCC president Sarat Pattanayak and Odisha in-charge Ajoy Kumar of selling party tickets for money and fielding weak candidates to benefit the Biju Janata Dal.[8][9] His expulsion was revoked in December 2024.[10]

In December 2024, as INTUC national secretary, he criticized the division of the East Coast Railway, calling it "a betrayal of Odisha's economic interests and a direct attack on the State's self-reliance."[2]

In July 2025, an FIR was filed against Choudhury and 25 others following a protest.[11]

Media appearances

[edit]

Choudhury has appeared in media discussing political issues, including a podcast on labour rights in February 2023 and interviews reacting to party appointments and events.[12]

Business and public life

[edit]

Choudhury is the managing director of K1 Security, a private security company. He served as a director of the Urban Cooperative Bank in Bhubaneswar from 2002 to 2008.[13]
