Introduction
[edit]The MAPPA Lab (Metodologie digitali APPlicate all’Archeologia – Digitally Applied Methodologies for Archaeology) is a research laboratory within the Department of Civilisations and Forms of Knowledge at the University of Pisa [1]. Founded in 2011 with the aim of developing and applying digital methodologies to archaeology, the laboratory focuses on topics related to Digital archaeology, including Open Data, data analysis, Artificial intelligence, and Geographic information system (GIS). In recent years, it has expanded its research interests to include environmental archaeology and contemporary archaeology, while maintaining a strong theoretical approach across all its research areas.
History
[edit]The laboratory was established in 2011 by Francesca Anichini, Gabriele Gattiglia, and Maria Letizia Gualandi, who became its first director. Its purpose was to implement the MAPPA Project (Metodologie Applicate alla Predittività del Potenziale Archeologico—Applied Methodologies for Predicting Archaeological Potential). After the project's completion, the laboratory consolidated itself as a research unit in Digital Archaeology. In 2023, upon Maria Letizia Gualandi's retirement, Gabriele Gattiglia became the new director.
Collaborations
[edit]The laboratory has collaborated with various national institutions, including the Superintendencies for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Pisa, Livorno, Florence, Pistoia, Prato, Lucca, and Massa Carrara, as well as with technological partners such as INERA Srl and Miningful. It has also collaborated internationally with the Institut national des recherches archéologiques préventives and the Archaeology Data Service at the University of York.
Activities and Projects
[edit]The MAPPA Lab promotes and coordinates interdisciplinary projects at both national and international levels, focusing on three main research areas.
Digital Archaeology
[edit]In this field, the laboratory engages in data analysis and visualisation, particularly in processing and representing complex archaeological data; spatial analysis using GIS and R (software) to study the spatial distribution of archaeological sites; the management of Legacy and Open Data; and topics related to Big Data [2] and Artificial Intelligence in Archaeology [3]. It takes part of FAIR (Future Artificial Intelligence Research) [4], funded by NextGenEU.
Main Projects
[edit]ArchAIDE (Archaeological Automatic Interpretation and Documentation of cEramics) [5] [6] [7] [8]: A Horizon 2020 project that led to the development of an AI-assisted application for the recognition of archaeological ceramics. The project won the Heritage in Motion Awards in the App category [9].
AUTOMATA (AUTOMated enriched digitisation of Archaeological liThics and cerAmics) [10]: A Horizon Europe project started in 2024, dedicated to advanced robotic digitisation of archaeological ceramic and lithic artefacts, enriched with archaeometric data and supported by Artificial Intelligence. MAGOH (Managing Archaeological data for a sustainable GOvernance of Heritage) [11] [12]: An evolution of the first MAPPAGIS [13], this is a territorial-based project aimed at creating an integrated platform for the management of archaeological documentation. It contains archaeological data from northern Tuscany and is interoperable with the National Archaeological GeoPortal (GNA) [14].
MOD (MAPPA Open Data Archive) [15]: An Open Data repository for archaeological data, part of the Digital Library [16] of the Department of Civilisations and Forms of Knowledge at the University of Pisa.
Contemporary Archaeology
[edit]This research area focuses on the study of the contemporary world through archaeological methodologies. In November 2023, MAPPA Lab, together with the University of Bari Aldo Moro, organised the first Italian Conference on Contemporary Age Archaeology (CIAC 2023) [17] [18].
Main Projects
[edit]Archaeology of the Abandoned Mountain: This includes a series of projects[19] [20] [21] [22] aimed at understanding depopulation and resurgence dynamics on the Versilia side of the Alpi Apuane from the 19th century to the present. These projects intertwine human history with environmental changes[23] [24].
Archaeology of Contemporary Undocumented Migrations: This includes a series of projects[25] [26] [27] [28] [29] [30] [31] dedicated to studying contemporary migration through the material record and an archaeological perspective, starting from Lampedusa[32].
Environmental Archaeology
[edit]Research in environmental archaeology focuses on the intertwined relationships between humans and nature, addressing both theoretical and methodological aspects.
Main Projects
[edit]Forsaken Ecologies: A series of projects[33] [34] aimed at analysing, in an integrated way, the material traces of human activities, the situated knowledge of local communities, and the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the Versilia region of the Alpi Apuane.
The Gardens of the Carthusian Monks of the Certosa di Calci: A Garden archaeology project studying the relationships between human and non-human elements within the gardens of the Carthusian monks[35] [36] [37] [38].
Journals
[edit]Since 2021, the laboratory has been publishing an international diamond Open access journal titled ArcheoLogica Data (ALD). The journal exclusively publishes articles that include an attached open dataset[39]. Since 2023, ALD has been included in the list of scientific publications by ANVUR[40]. Since 2024, a monograph series titled MOLD – Monographs of ArcheoLogica Data[41] has been associated with the journal.
Trivia
[edit]The laboratory is the official inventor of Wasteball.
